Is a sliding barn door considered ada accessible as an door for a bathroom in a studio apartment. It would be a side approach.

Thanks!

It can be, but hardware and clear floor space can often be very challenging.

They can be treated similar to a sliding door (see image from A117.1 Fig. 404.2.3.3 below).

The side where the barn door is hung is often not too complex. The issues start to present more on the side opposite the barn door where the hardware is either non-existent (due to colliding with the wall) or is recessed and non-accessible due to need to grasp or utilize dexterity to operate (see 404.2.6). Also challenging to get the clear floor space from my experience.

It might be necessary to make the jamb at least 36" wide and let the door project 4" beyond the jamb when fully open so the hardware can be grasped from the back side.

Are you building dorms or housing for a public agency? Why is an apartment under ADA?

You can use barn doors for FHA and ADA. You must pay attention to hardware and clear opening width (they are related for barn doors). There are graspable handles made specifically for this application but many pulls will work.
