    Quick conversation with contractor

Cont: "Do I need the whole house cleaned and decorated for the final inspection?" Me: "No, but you do need toilet paper on the holder." Cont: "Really??? When did that start?" Some people will believe anything and everything is in the code book.

That cracks me up! All that money on hardware and they forgot the "big picture".

    Drilling roof truss

Drilling a hole would require the OK from the truss manufacturer. If the lift system is for anything other than lights, I would be concerned about overloading the truss as well.

Span Tables in the IRC for exterior decks

Joist spans are shorter for treated lumber. Use DCA-6 or, for me, southernpine.com wet location span charts.

    APA's Proposed Solution to R501.3

I contacted the APA about the additional dead load applied if you were to finish the basement at a later date. The I-joist would have drywall sandwiched on both sides and then drywall hung from the bottom. It would decrease the dead load capacity 3.4 psf on a 12" I-joist spaced 24" oc. The...

    Vinyl Guard around deck

OK. I have the testing reports. It seems you have to use the aluminum insert to meet loading requirements. Funny that Home Depot doesn't seem to have that option for you to buy.

    Vinyl Guard around deck

Looking over deck plans/specs with homeowner before pulling a permit. He wanted to put these guards from Home Depot around the deck. Click the link and then click on specifications....look at the structural/ornamental category...

2012 IRC Section R501.3 Fire protection of floors.

Kentucky adopted it with no changes. Kinda surprised me.

How does a house get built without permit/inspections and then hooked into utilities? I guess utility companies could care less about inspections.

    Refusing inspection

We only inspect rental houses if the tenant complains. And they still have to be living there for us to make an inspection. If they move out, and then complain, there's nothing we can do.

    Deck collapse in Southern Indiana

I have ran across a couple "suspect" contractors, but nothing on the level of this. I was talking to one of our other inspectors about how we would deal with a rip-off situation like this and it's a slippery slope. I would be interested in talking to my boss and the city attorney to get their...

    RV's used as dwellings....

I had a family that lived down the street from me that lived in an RV for a few years. The conditions were so bad, at one time, that they replaced the original RV with a "newer" one. The new one required a tarp on the roof to keep it dry. I finally grew tired of the conditions, knowing there...

    Bundle up its cold

So I got my truck stuck on ice/snow today and had to pulled out by the builder. I was hoping to pocket the favor I did for him last week for a much longer time.

    Too late to move it

I don't like to use the phrase "it's too late". There's always time to learn from mistakes.

Safety Glazing Required At Water Closet

Yes. Both windows within 24" arc. They could change the swing and put the latch on the window side and meet exception 3.

Floor collapse in an apartment during party

Lexington, Ky. Fairly new apartments. Approx. 100 people dancing and jumping around during a party causes floor to collapse. Look at the end of the video and notice where the I-joists broke. HVAC ductwork running perpendicular right at the spot they broke...

That is just absolutely incredible. Anytime you can use a road cone in a manner it wasn't meant to be used, I'm all for it.

    Fence

I can understand a zoning permit. It's amazing how many people don't know where their own property line is located. We have city ordinances that don't allow fences in front yards, other than decorative. If you're on one of those large "corner" lots, guess what, you can't use but a quarter of...
