    My early Christmas present

Congrats on the job. You'll get used to the heat after a while. Be 70 this weekend. Been here 11+ years and enjoy every minute of it. Some advice: don't plant anything as rocks are the main ground cover, frees up more time to enjoy life. Ditch the winter gear and stock up on shorts and...

    Fees For Solar Installations

Not in the business anymore but IIRC solar water permits were $75.00 and PV systems were $150.00. They had to include all details including mounting, number and type of panels and units used. Usually a one line drawing of electrical did the job and it had to include all the...

Anyone interested in Putting together a Pittsburgh contractor training seminar?

Back in the 90's I helped put on a training classes on the new "shear wall requirements" of the 94 UBC. Found I could get ICBO, now ICC, to come in and provide all sorts of classes. Those cost money. So we went with a combo of suppliers that were willing to come in for free. The two that...

What are the causes of corruption in building departments?

Well I must admit the candy around Christmas was good. Glad it was brought into the dept for all to share. Otherwise I guess I'm too dumb to want to or to accept any thing while on or off the job.

    Look for the signs.

Had this lady come into the office years ago and complain that the power company wanted her to move the meter. With a puzzled look on my face I asked why? "Because they say it's in a room," was the answer. Go there and sure enough it's like your pic, ICE. Now mind you she had just bought the...

    SFR Garage Conversions

We did the sq ft fee. Gave them credit for the garage since it's existing on the fee. So 234 sq ft for room minus 234 as garage equals balance due. May not be perfect but sure stops the arguments.

    LEED Questions

Sue the two buildings at the city were LEED buildings. I never had to do anything for the LEED part in either the review or during the inspections. LEED basically is a paper trail on what they did in doing the project. Example if they brought in fill how much and from what distance. If they...

1 or 2 Permits For A New Commercial Building

Did the same thing here for the SS building. Issued a shell and a TI within days of each other. Shell was completed first and TI later. As for open spaces in a shell building that happens a lot also. Sometimes it's a tenant wanting to move in/or many times just get a price break from his...

Incomplete Tenant Finish Plans: A Brief Vent

I used to write the items that never corrections down in our Tidemark case file and hand the printed part out when they came in with corrected sheets/items. I would cross off the items that were corrected and cross those off the list. Very few times did correction last more than 2 times. Even...

    Training a newbie

Think Mule covered most of them. I liked to start in one room and walk around the walls then the next room. Easier to check one at a time. Here we wrote down what needed fixed then moved to the next. Otherwise you may forget item(s) if you wait until later. Never do punch lists and walk...

    4th of July

Great State of AZ decided that Fireworks are legal now. Of course watching the fires in the state and NM on the news for the last couple of weeks, makes one wonder how many fires will be started this weekend because of fireworks.
