    approved joist hangers

I'm not sure what you mean by a side mounted hanger. I've attached an image of what I refer to as one but this type is often used for both floors and ceilings so I'm thinking you must be referring to some other type of hanger.

    Ab 407

This all tie into AB32, the Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act, where California is going to show the rest of the world how to live 'within our carbon footprint means'. This means it's necessary to make energy more expensive (think TDV and TOU metering on electric panels) so we use less of it...

    Erosion Control

The biggest 'dirt polluters' by far in the city of San Diego is the city itself with the unpaved alleys in hilly areas. BTW historically that is how sand has been formed, by the runoff from the canyons into the ocean.

Rafter thrust control for flush beam

I just read the catalog page again and the VB brace requires the members being connected to be a minimum of 2-1/2" so that's out if those are 2x joists; strapping on the bottom and blocking to pick up where the gyp. bd. can't be nailed as suggested above would be quick, good, and easy.

    Thermo-ply wall sheathing

Strong walls have been a good solution for us to be able to comply with the ever increasing structural requirements imposed from the building codes. Vinyl windows, good ones, seem to work well, do a better job of not transmitting heat (or cold), once again making it easier to comply with ever...

    New Roof Advice

In order for a ridge vent to work really well one also needs soffit venting, preferably with a similar amount of ventilation high and low. The hot air rises and goes out the ridge vent and this action sucks in the cooler air at the soffit vents; it works really well.

    Adjusting Lintel Height

It's awfully difficult to get a concrete floor to drain when the pitch is 1/8:12................ Be a good idea to make it 1/4:12 although as pointed out the slope is noticeable.

    Rafter Spans and Purlin braces

I was reading an article a while back about hurricanes and how to keep houses intact and the gist of it seemed to be to have good connecting hardware from the rafters to the foundation. This included hurricane ties from the rafters to the plates and studs, sufficient A.B.'s from the sill plate...

    Simpson Strong Wall

It keeps going on, doesn't it? As you know the stab bolts on a strong wall go quite a ways into the footing so while that is not good it's probably not a total disaster, especially as you mentioned up the thread that there is a strong wall on both sides.

    truss question

Thanks Rider, I appreciate the heads up and this is an interesting discussion. I would say that as the technology of building advances, if that's the right word for it, there's pluses and minuses that come along with it. I guess the ideal home from a fire safety aspect would be a concrete one...

    truss question

That's a valid criticism however I'm sure that fire fighters are well aware of the limitations and have been trained to deal with them accordingly. The same criticism could probably be made regarding engineered floor joist systems as well as engineered roof joist systems and platform framing in...

    truss question

In a fire all sorts of building systems can and do fail and unfortunately sometimes fire fighters do die as a result. What that has to do with this current issue is beyond me, especially as I specifically said 'CONSULT WITH THE TRUSS ENGINEER'.
  21. R

    truss question

It should be checked by the truss engineer and it's very, very likely the truss engineer isn't going to make them tear it out. You can see on the photo that the whole area there is beefed up and the truss engineer will probably be okay with it being the distance it is away from where it should...

    Simpson Strong Wall

For the vertical loading a solid header is not required (just look at any garage built before lateral loading became such an issue) and there's ways, some of which I outlined in my first post, to transfer the shear loading sufficiently to the strong walls. As a matter of fact we've run into...

    Simpson Strong Wall

Not necessary and much more expensive than doing a correction in the field. There's times when starting over is the only option, this isn't one of them.
  24. R

    Simpson Strong Wall

Yeah, they really screwed up but it can be salvaged. Have an engineer or competent architect design the shear transfer.........Solid block all voids between the strong wall and header, sheath entire face of wall with structural I ply, strap it at top and bottom of header, carrying blocking into...

    Threshold stop strip and ADA
