Dept. of Irony: When fire extinguishers made no difference

At the station that was our favorite scene of the whole movie. We laughed most at the guy trying to tackle the 1.5 inch hose. I have had several people ask if fire extinguishers can be used like that movie showed.

I am so happy you did not post the pictures of you on a ladder!

    fire sprinkler condensation

The water in the pipe must be cold enough to cause the moisture from the air to condense on the pipe. The sprinkler pipe and contents should be approximately the same temp as the surrounding air. The only time I have seen the pipe be cold is when filling the system with water, or during a flow...

And they are blaming the Building Official, Why?

Was the contractor licensed and did they know what they were doing? How many contractors were contacted? What was the process to decide who to hire? The most qualified, best trained or just the cheapest? 1. the B/O allowed a shortcut in the process and the contractor took advantage of the...

We see those at higher elevations. It is a snow splitter, so the snow does not fall on the A/C unit. Apparantly the roof was designed for higher elevations.

A frayed propane line? Was it a hose, or a flexible metal line? Is a hose allowed for use in a building? Did the hose enter the heating system cabinet w/o protection? I have seen metal flex lines enter appliances, and rub against the metal of the appliance.

    Go ahead. Tear it apart.

No, it is in the non-crawl space. But in 1890, cellars did have dirt floors. Unless they put pieces of left over wood flooring on top of the dirt.

    Go ahead. Tear it apart.

I replaced my gas water heater recently. The second since I have lived in my house. This time, I put the manual gas shut off between the gas pipe and the flex hose. But I did not put any shut off valves between the water flex hoses and the water pipe. I don't know why, I have 1/2 wog valves...

    Slope that pipe

I use both the pink stuff, and the test pen. Sometimes one will find a leak, sometimes both will find the leak. I get the pink stuff from a propane distributor. The natural gas distributor no longer will sell to contractors.

    Sprinkler Ariticle

So many times when I give an estimate, they skip what I will do and what I will not do and look at the price. He who does the cheapest job get the job. That describes a sprinkler upgrade we are doing now. And the sprinkler upgrade scheduled for next week.

    Personal experiences in a wheelchair?

When I tried to cut off my ankle with a chainsaw, I found crutches in the winter were not a good idea. Those yellow ramps and their dots can be treacherous. Driving myself was impossible. Dee had to drive me everyplace. I had to explain to a customer how to reset their gas valve. I could...

Now you tell me! I just bought a box of those to hold up the insulation that fell when the sprinkler head froze and broke. But the wire has got to be better than the baling twine I was going to use.

Knob & Tube Wiring and Replacement Insulation

I am sure the 2014 NEC was not in effect in 1890 when my house was built. But there was and still may be, programs to replace the knob and tube in residences. I took advantage of one of those programs many years ago, and got the knob and tube replaced. I think the interest was less than 2%.

    An average day

We have an annual sprinkler inspection next week. A couple of weeks ago, we did some sprinkler repair work in the building. I noticed some insulation above the ceiling was not fitting inside the framing of the roof, and the foil covering was gone. Also a piece of insulation batting was not...

    Duct Detectors

On the contractor side. All alarm work is subbed out, but I am normally on site during inspections. The sample tubes I have seen that were removed had a sponge rubber filter in the tube. The filter is in the end of the tube that goes into the smoke detector. You would be surprised at the...

    Duct Detectors

As promised, duct detectors. 72-2013 Table 14.4.3.2 (5) & (8) Page 260 We can use a whole can of smoke, and still not get a duct detector to trip while the air is moving. W/O air movement, we can usually get the duct detector to trip. We have removed the tube and cleaned the sponge rubber...

    [Discussion] Smoke Alarm Sensitivity Testing

The manufactuer's magnet test does NOT test for smoke entry. But it does meet NFPA 72. We have convinced one local State FM to allow us to test 20% per year. At the end of the 5 year cycle, we have tested all the smokes. Two problems with a 5 year cycle 1.is convincing the client to OK the...

Happy New Year! What are you all doing?

We took Max from a shopping mall to the Schnitz, where we attended the Oregon Symphony rendition of Beethoven's Ninth. Great concert, but I still think James DePriest was a better conductor. And the Max does not seem to have the collection of weird people as those found on a Tri-Met bus. We...

    Hinges Deal or Dud????

Getty, what link are you using? http://www.globetechnologies.com/ Globe has a variety of metal links. There are also glass bulb links, http://www.job-group.de/en/products/job-thermo-bulbs-product-range/. These are used in sprinklers, and some chemical suppression systems.
