Bill, The infill on stairs within the IRC since 2003 is 4-3/8". Spiral or straight or winders, they are all the same as that requirement is i the guard section.

    2021 IRC Insulation requirements

So, will the R-value Zip sheathing get you there? I personally prefer the R-9, but they make an R-6 also. I like it a lot, not sure how simple that is to get in your neck of the woods but works great IMO, cost is not really that bad in my neck of the woods...

    Accessible Ramp - minimum width

EH that was one of the ramps, the OP noted the inspector was calling for minimum 48" between, Thus, one would assume the ramp the op was talking about was smaller than 48". NC requires 48"

    Accessible Ramp - minimum width

NC requires 48" minimum between the handrails on accessible exterior ramps. Ran into this about 4 years ago with a client. the link to the website is https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/NCBC2018/chapter-11-accessibility#NCBC2018_Ch11_Sec1104

    UCC required inspections for monolithic

John, Sorry to hear of your current situation. Just to the rest of you here, NJ deletes the entire chapter 1 from the code on adoption of the IRC and has their own replacement, so quoting chapter 1 here does him no good for section number, but the replacement text provides the similar context...

    Code required.. to get in

I ran into one of these for the first time in a Gas & Go type store back in 2022 driving to KY for the hearings. Above the digital lock was another privacy bolt with the standard slot key. The digital lock used a latch not a bolt, thus latching locked when the door closed, I have also seen...

    Throwing shade on solar.

Back in the early and mid 80's I did my fair share of large dish installs in rule areas. More than a few for clients, that had more tree coverage than ever could work. When told them their property was not going to be ideal because of all the tree coverage, they informed me to install it on...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

YC, I would love it if plan reviewers and inspectors all across the country called it the way you are representing, however, that is not the way it is being enforced by the major majority of AHJ that the fabricators I talk with run into everyday on projects. Additionally, that is not the...

Guard Code for Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Good morning MAc Moonfire, This question came to me from a member of one of the industry associations I represent as a resource for their members to contact me with questions. This member happened to be in Canada, which I understand the adopted basics, but not so familiar with the specific...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

These bad details are often pushed down to the fabricators who in the past have always said the architect and engineers know best, to learning just because it is on a sealed set of drawings, does not mean what they designer provided is correct. Leading to the question I receive the most from...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

The IBC in 2012 Sec. 1003.3.4 Clear Width, does not have exceptions, as thus projections into the minimum required width between handrails on the ramps of accessible routes, if more than 36" is required by the calculated minimum, then the handrails are not allowed to reduce the wider clear width...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

Ramps are different than stairs, as there are normally very few ramps that are not part of the accessible route. Per 1003.3.4 Clear width. Protruding objects shall not reduce the minimum required width of accessible routes. There are no exceptions listed for 1003.3.4, Thus, the accessible...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

Paul - Question, How do you get there with 1003.3.4 Clear Width? I have had many a client flagged in the past for handrail projecting into a ramp width over 36-inches between handrails, that has a designated larger required clear width than was between the handrails, but not when you take the...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

So how would you design and come up with the ramp width that is required to have a specific clear width between the handrails? I am not saying the posted method is specific to the OP's question of the interpretation, I am saying to get a base width of what needs to be in place work from the...

    2018 IBC Required Ramp Width (1012.5.3, 1014.8)

The way I was taught to look and understand projections and or into the required minimum width, was that projections are based on the requirements of the Protruding objects requirements. Required minimum widths either allow the reduction of the handrail or not through an exception. Simply...

A History of Code Compliance Abuse : Case in Point - Riverwalk Saloon, Lehighton, PA

IG, not sure how long and how strong the code enforcement has been in place up north in your area, but there was no way for a state the size of PA to go from a large portion of the state not having any code enforcement in the rural and semi-rural suburban areas, to the next day having qualified...

A History of Code Compliance Abuse : Case in Point - Riverwalk Saloon, Lehighton, PA

I agree with you Jeff, But what I have seen is locals wanting to step up, and then get themselves in over their head and not have the backing or desire to fight it. It probably would have been simpler for them to opt out for the amount of permits they probably see in a year, but is there a way...

Guard Code for Montréal, Québec, Canada.

The Controversy Over Accessory Dwelling Units

As with anything, each has its positives and negatives. The area I moved from a few years ago, does not allow rental of ADU's. Hence, mom & Dad can live there, but you can't charge rent. As noted by others, we will see just what the option brings forth, as something new and claimed to be...

Guard Code for Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Good morning north of the boarder, I have a fabricator asking me about the code requirements for his area of Canada, specifically Montréal, Québec, Canada. A History of Code Compliance Abuse : Case in Point - Riverwalk Saloon, Lehighton, PA

It's hard to go from basically nothing to something very structured and expect it to take less than 20 to 30 years to get it on track. Heck some places take 12 years to update model code adoptions, yet alone get a smooth-running oversight working. That area of PA, as those that have worked it...
