Greetings to all!

I have a "new" medical office going in to a tenant space. This is a change of

occ. group from an "M" to a "B". The calculated occ. load is 28. One of the

required unisex restrooms is an existing non-compliant restroom that the

"new" tenants want to try and convert to a compliant Accessible unisex

restroom. Spaces and clearances are tight!

QUESTION # 1: Regarding the clear space requirement for a forward

approach lavatory (Section 606.2 ---> to Section 305.3), can the grab bars

for the toilet be located within the clear space of the lavatory?

Thanks for any input!

.

Clear space of the lavatory?

The clear space of the lavatory, usually does not extend beyond the drain line....

Thanks Mark for the input!

In your submitted picture, the dotted line representing the clear floor space at the lavatory,

can grab bars, for an adjacent toilet, be installed in that dotted line area?

Put another way, will grab bars installed within the dotted lines, for an adjacent toilet,

be an impediment for the forward approach to the lavatory?

Thanks!

I think what Mark and Francis are trying to say is that if the grab bars are in the lav clear space, there seems to be something else wrong.......(maybe?)

My question would be Why is a "unisex" required? And why is it allowed?

Thanks Francis for your input!

steveray,

My mistake on the description of the restrooms! They are 2 "new" separate,

(trying to be) ADA / Accessible compliant restrooms for the Men & Women.

In one of the proposed restrooms, the submitted layout of the wc in

relation to the lavatory, DOES appear to encroach on the clear floor space

requirement for the lavatory (referring to the graphic) that Mark H. posted

earlier.

The figure I posted shows the clear space, not measured from the wall, but from the drain pipe.

If a grab bar is mounted on the wall it will not fall within the sink's "clear Space".
