Anyone can comment on the IBC, NFPA's limitation regarding locating a boiler/furnace room on the roof of a mercantile occupancy building. Are there any limitations, what would be the requirements ? Pls refer to a para. of the relevant code section/para. Thanks. Elie

Welcome to the forum Elie! Someone smarter than I may have to take your question, as I am unaware of the requirement of which you speak....where are you getting that from?

What about IBC1509

I don't know about mercantile, but I know of a lot of college buildings with gas or electric boilers in rooftop mechanical penthouses that have been approved by a very strict state building official. The same separation and/or sprinkler protection is required that would be if they were inside the building.

The way I read IBC 1509.2.3 is if it is NOT used for shafts or mechanical equipment (which would include boilers) then it is considered as an additional story.
