Imagine the languid tides occurring in the ocean carry the strength to power the whole world. The power of the tides can be converted into electricity. This can be done by converting the mechanical energy present in the tides into the electrical energy.

The tides are predictable and can be deduced some hundred years in advance. The power of the tides is derived from the gravitational pull of the moon. Tidal energy can be created using a tidal dam or by ocean current. Ocean currents are formed by the effect of the blowing wind on the surface of the water. Tidal power is inexhaustible as it is available in plenty.

Tidal power is also deemed to be environment friendly. Unlike the fossil fuels, the tidal energy does not cause any pollution by emitting harmful gases to the atmosphere. Taking up tidal energy project can act as a good solution for those seeking energy independence.

not a new concept.. we talked about this in college 30 *yikes* years ago.

Yep, Peach - we must have had the same discussions (30+ years ago!). Interesting concept when discussed CONCEPTUALLY, but implementation is another matter entirely. Very challenging from a design standpoint - expensive construction and a maintenance nightmare. That doesn't mean I'm against it, just needs some realistic value engineering.

You could also harness the wind and water flow on/in rivers to generate electricity - Turbines mounted on water wheel based generators, double the bang for your buck.

Now, if you can find a way for Big Oil to make a profit from it, you may be able to move it forward...

Expensive to build, possible hazard to navigation, and what about the critters that are disturbed?

Getting past enviromental impact study to get approvals will be difficult.
