I have a Type III-A wood framed apartment project with inset balconies that are 1-hour rated and not subject to the provisions of 2018 IBC Section 705.2 because they are not “projections.”

According to Section 2304.12.2.6, I must provide ventilation openings for the enclosed wood framing because the balconies are exposed to rain, snow, etc.

The ventilation requirement seems to contradict the requirement to maintain a 1-hour rated balcony assembly.

Does anyone know of a resolution for this?

Have a similar issue and question, but mine are projections, but are sprinklered so no fire resistance rating required. I noted the required ventilation on 1st review, which was provided. In considering this initially I had the same question and came up with rated ventilation opening products that may be viable. Now if I can just get them to give the correct amount of ventilation....
