Hi guys,
I’m a new member to the site and I’m hoping that this will be a great resource for me to get up and running with some CWI related activities. I obtained my CWI in 2014, but was stuck in a dead end welding job and nothing is fresh anymore. I recently got out and got a welding supervisor job at a small company with potential, and now I’m desperately trying to sharpen up. This small company is bidding on a number of jobs involving the DOT, and consequently AWS D1.1. They are still in the design phase, and I am trying to get prepared for this massive shift in focus.
I am wondering what qualifications I will need for the welders. I have attached a picture of one of the proposed structures. This will be set up on a full rotisserie jig. The material is 3/16” box tubing. We will have a flare groove weld and I’m assuming that we will be using a fillet weld all around the intermediate joists. The outer frame is made from 2” x 4” and the inner joists are made from 2” x 3”. So although the picture doesn’t show it, I believe that the joints will be stepped. It’s possible that the angles will exceed 60 degrees. I’ll have a better idea after the meeting on Thursday. We also have an I-beam being welded to a 1.25” plate. All materials will likely be pre-galvanized, and all welding will be done GMAW.
I’m also not entirely clear on the definition of T, Y, K connections with regard to box tubing. Are These T or K connections? Is it just a fillet weld? Why are T, Y and K connections separate from fillet welds in table 4.10?
Any help or guidance you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
