handrail dimension

in california c.b.c.) section 1012.3.1 requires the handrail outside diameter to be 1 1/4" to 2" if round. In section 1133B.5.5 that dimension is 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" if round. why the difference? when california goes ada in 2014 will this dimension be the same ?

The larger range comes from IBC/Ansi. The smaller from the original ADA. The new ADA now allows for the larger range. What California will do in a few years depends on what they smoke between now and then.

No. It's just that the ICC doesn't really care about graspability. If you've ever seen a 1.25" handrail next to one made out of 1.25 inch pipe, you'd get why the ADA required the smaller dimension.

The Illinois Accessibility Code specifically calls out that handrails shall be 1.25" to 1.50". So.....new handrails go up at City Hall and they exceed 1.50".

The determination from the State of Illinois "Accessibility Specialist" is that "the dimensions for the handrails are considered nominal and therefore the diameter can be up to 2 inches".
