IBC 3410 Moved Structures

Greetings all,

Would you require single family bldgs (R3) to adhere to this requirement of all moved structures being brought into compliance with current codes?

It depends!

1. What kind of shape is the structure in?

2. If you DID require full compliance, how would that be received

politically?

3. What does your elected officials want you to do regarding

these type of structures?

4. If the structure is not in too bad of condition, can you "legally"

only require a partial compliance?

5. Are you able to apply a consistent application / enforcement of

this code section, rather than a selective enforcment, which

is what I am directed to do on occasion?

There is another thread discussing this very issue. I am however not very good at locating past threads all that quickly. The wiring in my brain prevents me from being able to things that useful.
 
Yes, we require compliance, as long as it is technically feasable, which typically means stairs to basements, energy code. But we require they get as close as they can even with those.
 
I would have to say that the IRC is silent for a reason. The theme throughout the IRC is to limit the need for design professionals with prescribed methods of building; there is no prescribed method to bring an entire house up to today’s code standards with out massive reconstruction. If you go that far why move the home at all.

They make it clear that the footings and foundations will need to meet the current code, but that the rest of the home so long as it is not adversely impacted by the move (such as placed in a D or worse seismic zone and designed for an A) should be treated as existing and not be subject to the requirements for new construction.
