Hello Everyone,

Had to create a new handle, (TBZ) problem with login and emails.

Anyway, We are looking at a project, NON-MOE stairway interior of office suite goes from one level to the level below and used for company foot traffic only, so to prevent exiting office space to go to elevator and go up and down within the office.

They built the stairway with 90" widths between the guards on the stair flights, has a mid landing, here comes the question the wider width is not required, thus does the exception for monumental stairs of not having to have a mid handrail within 60" apply here? since they are larger than required are they not Monumental Stairs?

This is IBC- 2015 (NJ) adoption.

What do you all think?

How do you see this situation?

Thanks - Tom

If the stairway is not required for means of egress, then the width is of no consequence. If a monumental stairway is used for means of egress, then intermediate handrails would be required if most or all of the stairway width is required. Otherwise, only the 30 inches adjacent to each handrail can be used for complying with the minimum egress width.
