Good morning-

I'm putting together drawings for a memory care facility (I-2) w/ type II-B construction, fully sprinklered. Chapter 4 has some requirements specific to I-2, including the required locations of smoke barriers and smoke partitions. What I *don't* see is a requirement for wall construction - smoke or rated - for walls between the units themselves. We're putting this facility into a renovated space w/ high roof deck, and I'd like to avoid having to run these walls up to the deck if possible.

Thanks in advance for your insight and assistance!

SECTION 709 FIRE PARTITIONS

709.1 General. The following wall assemblies shall comply with this section.

1. Walls separating dwelling units in the same building as required by Section 420.2.

2. Walls separating sleeping units in the same building as required by Section 420.2.

3. Walls separating tenant spaces in covered mall buildings as required by Section 402.7.2.

4.Corridor walls as required by Section 1018.1.

5. Elevator lobby separation as required by Section 708.14.1.

709.2 Materials. The walls shall be of materials permitted by the building type of construction.

709.3 Fire-resistance rating. Fire partitions shall have a fire-resistance rating of not less than 1 hour.

Exceptions:

1. Corridor walls permitted to have a 1/2-hour fire-resistance rating by Table 1018.1.2. Dwelling unit and sleeping unit separations in buildings of Type IIB, IIIB and VB construction shall have fire-resistance ratings of not less than 1/2-hour in buildings equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1.

711.3 Fire-resistance rating. Unless required elsewhere in the code, smoke partitions are not required to have a fire-resistance rating.

We amend the heck out of alot of stuff.......Our amendments get rid of the reference to 420....So if there are dwelling units, they get something...But by pure IBC it would appear that nothing is required...

Chris_Sanders, Welcome to the forum. Wherever the Code requires a rated assembly Chapter 7 tells you how to build it. Chapter 7 is to Fire Resistance Rated Assemblies as Chapter 9 is to Fire Protection Systems.

I can't remember what a memory care facility is about. Come to think of it, I may have never known. Ya that's the ticket, I'm clueless.
