Greetings all !

Regarding the MOE illumination levels, ...I seem to remember
that there was language in the IBC requiring an amount of lighting
to the Public Way........Can some please clarify this with a
relevant Code section, or sections ?.......In my case I am using
the `12 IBC.

Thanks for any input !

1006.1 Illumination required. The means of egress, including
the exit discharge
, shall be illuminated at all times the
building space served by the means of egress is occupied.

1006.2 Illumination level. The means of egress illumination
level shall not be less than 1 footcandle (11 lux) at the walking
surface.

EXIT DISCHARGE. That portion of a means of egress system
between the termination of an exit and a public way.

How did I do?;)

You did GREAT
However the code did not in this case
We have commercial buildings in this state where the public way is a mile away from the exit

Can you modify for your State MT? You could always bring it in under the exception....

1027.5 Access to a public way. The exit discharge shall provide
a direct and unobstructed access to a public way.
Exception: Where access to a public way cannot be provided,
a safe dispersal area shall be provided where all of
the following are met:
1. The area shall be of a size to accommodate at least 5
square feet (0.46 m2) for each person.
2. The area shall be located on the same lot at least 50
feet (15 240 mm) away from the building requiring
egress.
3. The area shall be permanently maintained and identified
as a safe dispersal area.
4. The area shall be provided with a safe and unobstructed
path of travel from the building.

As long as you had lighting to the "rally point" I would say you would comply....

I have a project where a new Admin. Bldg is being constructed.
There is an existing Parking Lot for this new bldg........The RDP's
did not provide any info on the lighting in the Parking Lot and to
the Public Way......There is unobstructed access all the way to
the Public Way.

I have other Comments I am sending back to them.

Not an issue in my jurisdiction And we always have this we can use

(23) The building official may waive minor building code violations that do not constitute an imminent threat to property or to the health, safety, or welfare of any person.

So provide lighting for 50 feet from the exit and I would be good with it.

Site lighting for me is a Planning Board issue. They have standards for walks and parking
lots. I think the codes say something about open area or court. The parkling lot would be
that open area. Generally, civil work starts 10 feet outside of the building, so I wouldn't
extend my building code too far beyond that area.

I think this would work for the remote public way..........

1028.5 Access to a public way. The exit discharge shall provide
