Existing I-2 building, single floor, sprinklered, built under the 2009 code, but was constructed without smoke compartments or refuge areas, which they must now add.

In the picture, everything is existing except (2) 4ft wide door leafs 6 and 7. The refuge areas will consist of the existing dining area, lounge, lobby, and corridors.

Section 407.4.2 Independent Egress. A means of egress shall be provided from each smoke compartment created by smoke barriers without having to return through the smoke compartment from which means of egress originated.

Will each smoke compartment need at least two means of egress or just one means of egress? Occupant load exceeds limit of 10 people per 1015.1 which would require two means of egress.

Must the means of egress from Smoke Compartment #2 be sized to handle the 278 person occupant load (both smoke compartment occupant loads) or only 74 (Smoke Compartment #2)? If capacity for 278 is required, I am leaning towards NOT allowing egress through the laundry room.

If two means of egress are required from each smoke compartment, must the exits be located a distance equaling 1/3 the diagonal distance across that particular smoke compartment?

Thanks

It does say "A" MOE....So I would say 1 at least, more if that Smoke compartment needed it....And the width for everyone without doing some research...Gut answer..

Which each compartment should have already:::;

407.5.2 - Independent egress:

A means of egress shall be provided from each smoke compartment created by smoke
barriers without having to return through the smoke compartment from which means of
egress originated.
