Given: 5A Const, 4 story R-2 Apt building with a rooftop A-3 assembly area. 2 exits, fireplace, built in BBQs and an occupant load of about 150 or so.

Is the A occupancy allowed at this level?

If the A-3 is an accessory occupancy, IBC 508.2.3 requires that story height for accessory occupancies may not exceed table 503 without increases in section 504. So it couldn't be located on the 3rd or 4th story. BUT the roof isn't a story, so......???

Based on table TABLE 503 a A3 can not be located above the second floor in an VA building.... So no it cannot be on the roof of that building, reduce the load

Mark, just to clarify, up to the 49 occupants would work as an accessory occupancy, and be classified as an R-2? Remembering the beat to death thread referenced above, is that permitted to be above the 4th story with a height increase, say if the roof deck was less than 20' above the allowable height?

That beat to death thread should have a warning label: DANGER May cause brain damage in pets, small children, design professionals; it also may cause bleeding from eyes, nose, and ears.

The original post said occupant load of 150. Use Group A occupancy.
