Ok, been through to many codes.

Using 2015 IBC

I thought somewhere in the past, if you added vents, travel distance could be increased in either F or S??

Old school or still there??

If there WHERE??

You're back into the old UBC. The IBC now only requires a sprinkler system per Table 1017.2 for Groups F-2 and S-2. Groups F-1 and S-1 can be increased to 400 feet with a sprinkler system, too, but also are limited to single story buildings with a ceiling height of 24 feet or more per Section 1017.2.2. Without the minimum height and maximum one story, Groups F-1 and S-1 are limited to to the travel distances in Table 1017.2 for sprinklered and nonsprinklered conditions.

Get up and walk to nearest wall. Bang head against wall (10 times for gypsum board, 5 times for masonry or concrete). That should do the trick.

Also works great when working with architects that try to twist the code to their advantage (however, it's more satisfying if you can get the architects to bang their heads against the wall).

PS, I'm an architect, too, so I am throwing my profession under the bus.

The extra distance you are looking for has been removed from tables - more than likely, it is code section 1017.2.2 dealing with travel distance. (IBC 2015)

We are using a state modified code and some code sections may slightly differ -

FWIW, smoke and heat vents tend to create problems for fire sprinkler systems - which is the pecking order for operations - if the fusible link for the heat vent was to low, it would open, feeding air to the fire and overwhelm the fire sprinkler design -

Set the temperature to high, the vents never opened to let the smoke/heat out.

Also look at chapter 32 of the IFC for requirements pertaining to high piled storage - it may have better guidance for the smoke heat vents - the IBC simly states that a fire sprinkler system has to be installed in accordance with 903.3.3.1 (NFPA 13 fire sprinkler)
