on a new industrial private facility utilizing the unlimited sqft building and having the 60 ft open yard all around. on the south side however there is a railcar system
that runs parallel with the full building exterior on that side. Rail way will be used for shipping finished product to other states.
question: can the rail ways be within the 60 ft open yard or does 60 ft need to be beyond the rail ways? making the railways part of the building

A Rail Road ROW is not dedicated for public use

Q3: Is the 60-foot yard that is required to surround an unlimited area building required to be publicly owned?

A3: No. The 60-foot fire separation (open space) must be located on the same property as the building or on property dedicated for public use. The property on which the building is located may be privately owned or publicly owned. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

the railroad accessing this plant enters the privately owned facility. they are not for the public use..the 60ft is all within the private property. thats not the issue,,,it is the fact that the loading rail encroaches into the 60ft

Okay then what is in the rail cars? That might be a call for the fire department and the amount of combustibles or if the materials in the rail cars might be hazardous.

Q1: Are structures such as tanks, cooling towers, generators, and trash dumpsters permitted within the 60-foot public way or yard that is required to surround and adjoin an unlimited area building?
A1: Yes. An unlimited area building must be surrounded by a fire separation distance of not less than 60 feet. The fire separation distance, as defined in Section 702.1, is the distance measured from the face of the unlimited area building to an interior lot line, the centerline of an adjacent street, alley or public way, or to an imaginary line between another building on the same property. No other building is permitted within the 60-foot fire separation distance. The purpose of the fire separation distance is to establish a minimum separation between buildings that will serve to reduce the possibility that a fire in one building can spread to another building. It is not the intent to prohibit elements other than buildings from being located within the fire separation distance.

Q2: Is an automotive parking lot permitted within the 60-foot public way or yard that is required to surround and adjoin an unlimited area building?
A2: Yes. A public way can contain a street or alley that is specifically dedicated for vehicular circulation and parking. Vehicular circulation and parking are permitted within the portion of the 60-foot fire separation distance that extends beyond the building property and into a public way. Likewise, vehicular circulation and parking are permitted within the portion of the 60-foot fire separation distance that is located within the building property.

so yes i got all those interpretations, but the fact that the railcars may be there for long periods of time is not equivalent to cars parked that most of the time leave and or allow for access to buidligns thru spaces in between. rails cars are coupled together and this would prevent fire fighters to gain access to bldg.. the rail cars would be used to ship finished products.. my thinking is that the rails cars will be an extension of the building and that the 60 feet will be from the rail cars outward not the building...like if the rails cars where inside the building..

Go behind your Walmart or Home Depot and see how many 40 ft storage containers they have

I suggest you get the fire department input on if they could safely fight a fire if the railcars are there.

yes i know but consider rail cars that are coupled together 200-400 ft long is a lot different...in other commentaries
"The open areas serve two key roles: separation of these buildings from other buildings and ample
space on all sides for fire-fighting operations."
