To become an ICC Certified Permit Technician, you need to pass the ICC Permit Technician Certification Exam. This exam, administered by the International Code Council (ICC), tests your knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC), International Zoning Code (IZC), Legal Aspects of Code Administration, and Basic Code Enforcement. The exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and has a 2-hour time limit. It's an open book exam, meaning you can use specific reference books during the test.

The exam covers four main areas: General Administration, Legal Aspects, Plans and Documents, and Zoning and Site Development. The General Administration section, which forms the largest part of the exam, focuses on customer service, project applications, basic building concepts, permit issuance and fees, and inspections and Certificate of Occupancy. Legal Aspects include public information, legal, records management, record research, and appeals and revocation. Plans and Documents cover review of related documents, occupancy group and type of construction, map reading, and calculations. Finally, Zoning and Site Development includes land use, right-of-way, utilities and easements, and site plan review.

For preparation, there are courses available that teach you how to pass the Permit Technician exam, including understanding the required information and offering practice exams online. These courses can be taken in a classroom, via live webinars, or as recorded webinars.

No work experience is required to take the exam, and you must be at least 18 years old. The ICC requires that the exam be taken through the PRONTO system, which allows for remote online testing.

Becoming an ICC Certified Permit Technician is a significant accomplishment, demonstrating your expertise and dedication to the field. It can lead to enhanced professional stature, increased career opportunities, and expanded building code knowledge.
