City Council to consider a tax to finance construction of sidewalks and curb ramps

BEND, OR -- The group Advocates for Disabled Americans, Inc. asked the Bend City Council Wednesday night to consider a tax on water and sewer users. Brian Douglass told Councilors it could would raise $100 million, or $8.5 million a year for up to 15 years, to finance construction of sidewalks and curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “The revenue stream is created from a monthly fee or tax on city water-sewer accounts. This additional charge will increase incrementally based on the amount of construction work that can be done over a given three year period and the actual amount of the debt that is issued.”

Douglass asked for a three-tiered approach to the issue. “One, place this issue on the council agenda now; number two, hold any legally required public hearings. And most importantly, hold an up or down vote by June the 30.”

Advocates for Disabled Americans is one of seven members of the Make Bend Accessible Coalition, which has been pushing for more accessible sidewalks and curbs for several years. Councilors agreed to schedule a work session to discuss the proposal.

What does water & sewer usage have to do with accessibility? They are probably trying to avoid an honest property tax increase and the resulting uproar.

For a city of 81,236 what's another $100 million? That's only $1,231 from every man, woman, and child, the disability activists know that if they put that as a tax increase on the ballot people will not only vote it down but start kicking gimps in their wheelchairs on the street. Bend has already been economically destroyed by the environmental activists who destroyed logging, their main industry, they are now trying to reinvent themselves as a recreational area only to get hit by another greedy activist group.

Conarb, that's why it's pronounced "Bend o'er again".

Good one Yikes, most of these social activist groups got their special privileges by piggybacking on the Blacks' Civil Rights law except one, the damn bicyclists, they have no special privileges yet they are the lead social activist group storming into city council meetings demanding special privileges while not being listed as a legal suspect class. The bastards held up the east span of the Bay Bridge for years demanding a special bike lane, it only takes them half way across the Bay, they got it at a cost an extra billion dollars, I guess I've crossed the new bridge about a dozen times and I've only seen two bicycles using the bridge to nowhere, now they are demanding a special lane be hung on the old west span to get them all the way to San Francisco, bids have come in at $400,000 on it but they haven't got it - yet anyway. To boot, they don't want to pay any tolls because they are saving the planet!

They should tax wheelchair purchases, single speed fixie bikes, criminally overpriced denim jeans, organic vegetables, indie bands, designer donuts, craft beer, Pendleton shirts, and heroin.

If they can then survive the hipster revolution (they hate Guns so it shouldn't be too hard) they should have new sidewalks in about a week and half.

Definition of a Hipster: "You graduated from a liberal arts school whose football team hasn't won a game since the Reagan administration" and "you have one Republican friend who you always describe as being your 'one Republican friend.'"
