For those NOT in Onterrible... (But still in Canada.)

One of my co-workers just had a "plan" created by a dude who hangs a shingle out as a house designer. Basically, this dude can operate some kinda autocad program, and that's about it.

Said to my co-worker that it's not his job to provide us with the points required under tier one of the 9.36 energy requirements.

I figure, he's the freaking designer. It's his job to do that....

Thoughts?

(Not Ontario because they are smart and require part 9 designers to be trained/certified.)

He can design as he wants, but in the course of your job you will reject the drawings for missing or incorrect information.

I have dealt with good and bad "designers", same as architects. One of the worst plans I have recently seen was from a PHD in architecture.

Those who can do..... those who can't ....

I frequently had this discussion around ICF.

As a building official, I didn't really deal with designers. I deal with the owners. Most of the time, I would suggest that the plans they received were deficient as they lacked the basic information to confirm code compliance and they should ask for a refund and find a designer who is competent.

Then I did get to deal with some VERY angry designers. Told them they could either get better of find a new line of work and I didn't care which.

If the designer is not designing to tier 2, the builder now needs a second designer to do that aspect. Who in their right mind would hire the first designer?

...licensing for Part 9 designers is in the works (in planning phase)...
