Small Press Box at Little League Field

I don't know if the code wou;d support you but GFCI's would be a great idea. Most of these things always connect to some kind of outside apparatus, scoreborad, PA system. Usually are opened up to the weather, like a big fold down or up 4X8 opening so the occupants can see the entire field of...

Attic Vent in Overhang Proximity to Window

Thanks for all the replies..... I had my inspector look also. I couldn't ever remember seeing it in the codes but you guys know how that is! All of a sudden you read something and say to yourself... huh! Wonder when they put that in the code! :) gbhammer... you got that right! The first code I...

Attic Vent in Overhang Proximity to Window

Not a specific code. It was more of a "been in the code forever" question. One homeowner after another homeowner telling me the house was in violation because of location of overhang vents.

Attic Vent in Overhang Proximity to Window

Had a builder that was builds in a different city question the location of overhang vents within six feet of a window. I've heard of this before but it was more of an estetic issue than a code related issue. I told him what I thought..but apparently he is angry about a neighbor and is trying to...

    2012 ICC Board Election

Maybe it's because we don't need to know anything else about you! We know who you are, we know you will represent us well, and until you announce that you would appreciate assistance, there is no need to comment...........why ask questions? You are you and you are the person we support! By the...

NEC 2008 Test Question. I have Searched all weekend to no avail.

If you only need one question to get your certification what about the other questions you missed. Maybe you got that "one" question you are referring too right and it was another question in that category you failed to answer correctly? Just thinking.......

    MCP

There's a good article in IAEI online magazine. Not quite the same but it's on certification vs licensing. Obtaining certifications do show that you are good at taking tests. Hopefully you know where to find answers in the code...however I think that there is nothing like good old experience...

Egress door locks keyed or not?

When I first arrived at the jurisdiction I am at now the police department was provoding free crime prevention surveys on SFR. One of their recommendations was to change all thumblatch deadbolts out to a keyed deadbolt. Fortunatly one of the residents was a local builder. He called me and asked...

Anything over four feet we consider a joist.

    flat ceiling 2x4

For some reason the photo didn't load the first time I read the thread.... Thanks. We treat them like ceiling joists as far as loading because they are supporting sheetrock. We also look at if they are nailed or screwed. If just nailed I would think that the weight would tend to pull the nails...

    flat ceiling 2x4

I don't quite understand what you are describing. The key word soffit leads me to believe that this is the exterior of the building. And you have rafter tails that the framer is nailing to and then the 2X's go back into the exterior portion of the wall. Am I on the right track?

    Welds - Special Inspections

I do know that one of the reasons that ICC gives for purchasing codes is that you are able to copy and paste certain portions of the code when you are working with contractors, architects etc....

Permit Fees & Special Inspections - Poll

materials (building) cost + labor if it sounds reasonable. If not we use the BVA table. Whichever is highest we go with. One thing you have to think about is owner supplied material. Had a walmart that was supplying its own HVAC units. The contractor did not add that into the price so we did...

    I was surprised

ICE...did you and I grow up together? Sounds like some of the things I got into as a kid! I guess the one that hurt the worst was throwing rotten figs at the house next door and when the lady next door came out to stop us.....we found A LOT of rotten figs to throw at her! Granny got the switch!!!!!

    Framing Inspection Ready to Continue

The framing was some of the least of his worries. The foundation in the front dropped 2.5" in about 14'. On the back he told me the door was hard to open because the person laying the tile put a little too much leveler down, making the door drag. Well you could say that! The foundation had...

    Toe nails = bearing?

I've always heard 1 1/2 times the thickness of the wood. Which makes a little sense. You figure the length of a 16D is 3.5 inches. Normally you are nailing two 2 X's together. That's 3 inches sooo.....1/2 penetrating through the 2 X's. Close to 1 1/2 times. But now the codes allow for 10D's so...

    Framing Inspection Ready to Continue

Our policy... if there is any char the entire piece comes out! The new owner was overwhelmed! Since homeowners complaints have started streaming in we are going to enforce the code. Framing Inspection Ready to Continue

We've been working this for a few years. Transfering from one owner to the next. We kept trying to condemn the structure but every time we started to proceed a new owner would show up with no knowledge that the structure was under condemnation. A young man paid cash for the structure about 4...
