    Nasty storm+No power+Heat wave=NOT GOOD

We're on but lots of outage down here in sw VA as well. Our clients came up for the weekend and we were still at the job when it hit. We tried to get home after and didn't get a mile, 4 trees across the road in 2 miles, slept on the porch and cut out Sat morning. It's interesting what falls and...

    Lateral Tension Device

Keystone, You are following the requirement then, I follow the logic. The need as explained be dhengr would be near both outside corners but that is outside of the requirement. I am trying to shake it up a bit to think this through. More to think about, I'm doing more engineered floor systems...

    Lateral Tension Device

Big Mac, yes that was opinion, I said "not needed" rather than "not required", things are sometimes required that are not needed. Keystone, I'm unclear, are there 2 ties or 4? dhengr, I agree, but I think it would take one heck of a party. I hadn't looked deeper than the hold down connector...

    Lateral Tension Device

No it is not installed correctly, blocking all the way to the wall, but it is also not needed on this deck. "It is an exterior 2nd floor corner deck (two faces of the deck having a house wall)" The house corner provides far more than 1500 lb lateral restraint.

If that's the criteria... I suspect you just let two in the door. Trust, but verify.

    Deck posts?

Gut reaction, you can check it yourself or have the client retain an engineer to show that if they are spaced <8' apart on this deck the posts are at less than 50% capacity, slenderness accounted for. I'm pretty sure this is not one for "accepted engineering" to fail. There seems to be a great...

Roof frame pics to make you smile

I remembered a pic I posted a few months ago. Here the step is fully supported and used to resist the horizontal thrust of the rafter. Not a notch in the code sense, the dangling tit is doing serious work, so much so that it is checked for crushing and shearing off of the relish beyond the notch...

    Deck posts?

The code references the NDS or accepted engineering. You can work it out longhand, you can have a computer ask for the variables and work out the same formula, or you can use a table which has used the same formula and a fixed set of variables. It's all using accepted engineering. Whether you...

There is always the possibility I was fixating on a dangling tit.

Yes, I think he is fine by code. I told you what I would do and why. That is the re-entrant corner. Stress concentrates, splits and cracks lead out of, inside corners. I think your instructor was referring to thexception to R802.7.1, if there is an overhang beyond the birdsmouth there must be...

Roof frame pics to make you smile

Sifu, Northstar paid you a big compliment. Mr Edwards who was aquitted today, not very transparent. I saw mention of these being finger jointed rafters. I've never used finger jointed lumber. My first question is whether this is an appropriate use and whether the design values are the same as...

Roof frame pics to make you smile

The "notch" appears to be the unsupported 1-1/4" that is beyond the 6" seat cut. The code language does a poor job here, it should prescriptively say "the seat cut should not extend beyond the plate". Right now it says it can extend inboard off the bearing till it erodes 25% of rafter depth, he...

    Vinyl Windows

Kind of off topic but I had mentioned low e windows and heat reflection earlier in the thread. I've seen them buckle vinyl siding in the reflection area of a window. I was opening the windows over a porch roof yesterday and noticed the shingles had blistered. Went out on the roof to check and...

    Bearing location

I think the code is silent but clear span is generally used. Nitpicking- NDS 3.2.1; For simple, continuous and cantilevered bending members, the span shall be taken as the distance from face to face of supports, plus 1/2 the required bearing length at each end. (required in this sense is the...

stabilizing a very old house. HELP

Timberframe, wood joinery and connections, post and beam, steel plates and connections. Also while you're in there, whenever I can get to the timbers I borate them heavily. A cheap mix that is chemically the same as Bora-care is to go to a real farm supply and get a 50# bag of Solubor or 25# of...

    roof pitch

ICE, I was raising my hand as guilty too. I think we have both knocked the rough edges off and found a better honing angle :) Sifu, This is unrelated to the thread but related to the conversation. This calc is crude and my graphic could use some work for clarity, but shows the tension force...

    Memorial Day Weekend

The 44th regiment which General MacRae always made the center of his brigade, never lost a flag to the enemy, and we never charged the enemy without their giving way in our front. But our first flag was so mutilated by shot and shell that it was too small to be of service as an ensign any...

    roof pitch

ICE, it is real hard for me to disagree with the guy from Tarsus, I apologize. The comment about a tie reducing the beam size is one that gave me heartburn on a job I visited recently. The crew deviated and raised a set of ties well above halfway and installed an lvl that was too small to be...

    roof pitch

The tie tension at low slopes becomes very high, look at the heeljoint table at the end of the rafter span tables. A ridgebeam rather than a ridgeboard is needed. With a ridgebeam no rafter tie is needed, this is how a cathedral roof with no ties is constructed. This will give you some idea of...

30% reduction to Southern Pine Span Charts

I didn't post the minutes of the April 18 BOR meeting. It was mostly legal manuevering by the various stakeholders which were answered and largely dismissed. At this point the design reduction applies only to #2 2x4's this was a decision by the ALSC BOR, recommended effective date is Jun 1...

    2012 IRC Deck Attachment

We use treated rims in deck/porch areas whether freestanding or attached, have been on a second floor deck when the rims, joist ends, etc departed. My post supported decks are still bolted to the house for alignment but not for vertical load. Treated and metal flashings are a problem, this...

How do you educate contractors in between code cycles?

So you are selective in whom you deem worthy. Keep digging. I was just making a suggestion in my op. Off the top of my head I can think of two instructors who came up after a class, thanked me for attending and saying it was the best class they had taught. Yours is not an honest...

How do you educate contractors in between code cycles?

Jes. How many times have I heard "We had a great training opportunity last week, should have called to let you know" Thanks. When I pulled that permit 2% went to the training fund... that is intended for me too. Hey if you're too busy to call an email list is easy when you have something...
