    How To Kill Mold

The nice thing about bleach is that it will kill the spores. [sort of like bleach in the gene pool.] :-)

Access to equipment in an attic

I've asked for verification that the trusses are adequately designed for the 'new access' and movement of the equipment when necessary. They have asked my boss for a variance from the code requirement. He stuck by me, and told them no. My boss called other architects, who said my requirement is...

Access to equipment in an attic

Ice: The big deal is that they 'planned to abandon the equipment in place' when the time came that it failed. The code requirement is clear and straight forward, not a fuzzy issue. Although, in this jurisdiction it has become a political issue as the VP of the development corp put in writing...

Access to equipment in an attic

We currently have a hotel hotly contesting the IMC Section 306.3 requirement to have access that will provide for the removal of the largest piece of equipment. They are claiming that they have never had to do this anywhere, in all of their hotels. I find that hard to swallow. Has anyone run...

What is in your back yard?

I think a real man would offer the Grizzly bear all the apples he could eat and tell him to have a nice winter!

Off Topic Books Recommended for Reading

Have to add: Annals of a Former World, John McPhee, and anything else by him [The Control of Nature, Uncommon Carriers, etc.] Michael Crichton, Piers Anthony, Clifford Simak, James Michener. I seem to have a long list of authors who have written lots of books that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I...

    Apt. rents $8/foot

SF must have modified the IBC, like all of CA so it's the CBC. Have they modified the "efficiency dwelling minimum square footages" required? Efficiencies need 220 sq. ft. as the size for one room, plus closet, bathroom and kitchen area. Sounds like 220 sq. ft total is on the extreme side, even...

    My first SIP house :(

We are currently keeping an eye on a SIPs house that was built 30+ years ago; it is rotting from the peak of the roof down. The problem: identified that the SIPs were not 'sealed' correctly. The investigation is ongoing by the insurance company. The house changed hands about 18-24 months ago...

    Rick Weiland leaving the ICC

I got an email reply to my question to ICC, when is he leaving? The reply: He is already gone. Will this change the face of ICC at all? or much? What do we know about Dominic Simms?

Were does the Inspectors Enforcement stop?

Your opportunity to get it up to code would to issue [or not] a permit for a 'new' guard at the wall/stairs. Their conscience is soothed [they've made amends for previous violations] and they can sell the house and you get to issue a permit and do an inspection. Is everybody happy? Let the past...

    Rick Weiland leaving the ICC

PR written by an ad-man, not a journalist. Didn't answer the six basic questions: Who; What; When; Where; Why; and How. How soon will be he leave? Before or After the Portland, OR ABM/FAH? hmmmmmmmmmmm.

    Missing icc records?!??!?!

My Permit Tech just renewed her cert, but found that it didn't exist when she tried the first time. Had to go up the chain at ICC to get it fixed. Also, ICC does not recognize the IAPMO certification for plumbing inspectors. I thought there was some reciprocity. Maybe not. or Definitely NOT.

So you wanted to be a Building Official? Longevity?

I was with my previous employer for just over 16 years. I didn't leave because I was unhappy, although I was becoming somewhat unhappy with how things were managed; I left because I got an offer I couldn't refuse: 20% increase in pay, and an opportunity for personal growth, and professional...

Measure aims to check ADA lawsuit abuse in Calif.

Abusing the legal system does not correct the non-compliant businesses, but it does cost the taxpayers an awfull lot of money. And, where do the fines go? Into the pockets of the attorneys, and where else? The fines should be going towards correcting the non-compliant situations. But then, I am...
