    Engineer's confusing statement

Many clients ask design professionals including engineers to meet certain requirements. Those requirements may fall into gray areas of the codes. The engineer here is saying that he is not responsible for those items that fall into the gray areas. More importantly there is no legal requirement...

    When is a PE useless?

I don't put stamps on my work. I don't put my number on my work. My name always appears just below my signature. That is enough to make my insurer happy. --- Jar you are unhappy with the professionals work. But you are not the one paying for it. You have no standing. No reason to demand...

    2by6 equivalent???

There is no need for the two 2x4s to be as strong as a single 2x6. The only need is for them to be appropriate for the span. We don't know the loading. We don't know the span. We cannot help you.

Hawaii Fire chiefs want sprinklers in all new single-family homes

3000 people die in fires in the US (year 2000). 6000 pedestrians died in the same year. Perhaps pedestrians should be more regulated.

Radon Vent - how vertical is vertical?

As long as Radon will flow up I would be happy.

    expansion tanks

We have a well. So I know about those. The pressure tank acts as an expansion tank. I guess we could do some math on a typical tank. A 20 gallon tank set for a low pressure limit of 50psi and a high pressure limit of 100spi. (I think my tank is set for 60 and 80 but the math is more difficult.)...

I had to match what was there!

The code only requires engineering. There is no obligation for a builder to employ an engineer. He can simply do the engineering himself. (He cannot do engineering for a third party unless he is licensed, but he can do it for himself.)

I had to match what was there!

It is my usual stance here: due to the fact that those who post pictures here tend to lack engineering judgment. I don't expect AHJs or inspectors to have engineering judgment. It is not a job requirement. They should simply follow the prescriptions or submitted engineering. Lacking enough...

I had to match what was there!

It appears the NDS for Wood Construction has formulas for tapered beams. (at least I expect it or similar references do.) But if you are going to object to the taper, I would suggest you also need to object to to the bearing seats on most any rafter with an overhang.

    Housewrap requirements

That is what will hold the EASYGUARD on the framing until it is covered by the finished exterior.

I had to match what was there!

I will take my usual stance. What is shown appears to be allowed. The rafters seem to be proper for the span. The insulation seems to be proper given that windows do not need R-30. The header above the door is not yet finished. --- If you don't know the code, don't get a job inspecting.

    All new plumbing, no backflow

Sewer backflow prevention is dealt with by the sewer department. They issue a permit for a hookup with their requirements. Some sites do need backflow prevention. I expect the sewer people do an inspection. As for potable water. The plumbing code requires backflow prevention on hose bibs...

    Window Well Rescue Opening

Something about 180 days for the permit to expire and then time for the statute of limitations to run seems to indicate that whatever authority was had is long gone.

    Window Well Rescue Opening

I would politely indicate to the inspector that you will work with the owner to improve the window well situation, but that the inspector has no authority in the matter. --- It is hard to tell what situations you need to work around. I would favor a cover for the well.

    Soggy subfloor

While I agree that weather may cause problems, I have a question. Do you also require that the lumber, nails and whatever else is present be reexamined?

    Brain Tease: Deck plan submittal

dhenger --- You confuse your design requirements and code requirements. Your requirements might be prudent, but they are not required by code. So while I admit my math was outrageously unsuitable, you should admit yours are also. This question was posed as a code compliance question. Fill in...

Developing a New Concept and Making It Code Compliant

Robert Ellenberg --- I like your idea. I suppose the containers are the load bearing components of the structure - really nice to have the option of walls of windows between the sections. I would suggest doing engineering on the containers to determine just how much load can be supported by them.

    Beam end bearing at splice

I don't see any fasteners. Either the high strength air is doing it's job, or we are not getting the entire picture.

    Brain Tease: Deck plan submittal

There is no need to do accurate engineering. No need to do the correct engineering. Just a need to get a correct solution. The engineering I do shows that in most cases 1 8d nail is sufficient to handle uplift. dhengr you seem to roll up a lot of cases and consider the sum of them. You seem a...

    Brain Tease: Deck plan submittal

There is nothing uncalled for here. I recall a reply a couple days ago that echoed a reoccurring opinion: that AHJs get to use their judgment. Well, get some common sense and professional judgment. You wrote the initial post asking for what is wrong. What is wrong is that you use your...

Firefighter in grave condition after ceiling collapse in Hollywood Hills

    Brain Tease: Deck plan submittal

moment due to the overhang is something like 50*2.5/2 ftlbs. About 62ftlbs. Uplift at the house is 62/12.5 pounds. About 5 pounds/ft. 5*16/12 pounds per joist. Less than 8 pounds/sqft of uplift. If I include the weight of the railings, joists, and deck ... No problem. Get some common sense.

    Roof Deck from Hell

It seems you have changed much of the project description. Seems like usual maintainance work. I would not apply for a permit. But I can see why some people might apply for a permit.

    Roof Deck from Hell

I am not sure that the work the home owner did needed a permit. I am not sure that guards are required by code. Problem solved.

    Tongue and Groove Decking

Glue in the joints makes T&G into a very good diaphragm. I would prefer to use an epoxy - with a wood fiber filler.
