Trees......(aren't we supposed to be BUILDING inspectors??)

Me, too. And I'm a convert!!! This code recognizes us cyclists!! You now have to provide bicycle parking, shower and changing facilities, etc. for us!! Hopefully in a future edition they'll recognize the need for a cold beer after a long ride, and require building owners to provide us with...

Trees......(aren't we supposed to be BUILDING inspectors??)

I do see your point - and I agree. It's another one of those inevitabilities. I just hate it that many of the features shift the focus away from the original intent of the codes - safety.

I don't have much room in my reading list for social propaganda.....

Need a history lesson on EEROs

Thanks, Bill. I just found it in §609.4 of the 1975 BOCA. I was looking for it to have its own section in the Egress chapter, as it does now. Thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for the dumb question!!

Trees......(aren't we supposed to be BUILDING inspectors??)

Perhaps it's already a sub-category of the IGCC code - I wouldn't know, I've never taken the trouble to look at it.

Need a history lesson on EEROs

Had an interesting inquiry from a local realtor's association regarding bedrooms in basements - when are EEROs required. My response was that if they were existing and legal (converted or otherwise built under permit) they would be subject to the code in effect at the time. So I went in our...

Trees......(aren't we supposed to be BUILDING inspectors??)

Just curious - for those of you who do Property Maintenance / Nuisances - if your ordinances deal at all with trees? Ours has language about "diseased trees" (who makes such a determination? I can't find an ICC certification for "Tree Health Inspector") and considers them a nuisance -...

    Building Official Position Interview

I would say you have every reason to be optimistic! Good luck!!

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Well now I'm confused. In many of your other posts, you chastise inspectors for operating beyond their qualifications - in the case of engineering. I happen to often agree with you. But shouldn't we (inspectors) also be mindful that we do not possess the qualifications or credentials to...

    2009 Building Plans Examiner Test

My response can be considered completely unhelpful, but I had the same question when taking the test under the 2006. I wasn't even able to borrow a copy of ACI-318 from any of the A/E firms in our town (what does that tell you??). Finally found an older edition to borrow, and had maybe three...

Jake, I like that! It seems so appropriate to think of attorneys as non-human cartoon characters!!

    Achieving 2-hour horizontal separation

In answer to the "existing" question: This one's really interesting. It was built in the '20s as a 4-story theater. Then a tornado took off the top two stories in the 40's. The second story was never used again. The main level was used as a theater until the mid-90's. I agree that from...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Thank you, Peach - I very much appreciate your guidance. In a way, I kind of hope I never lose the "second guess" reflex. I see how one can get too comfortable in the position and assume they know many of the answers. I hope that if I continue to do this for the next 30 years, I always stop...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

The answer is: Never. And if the neighbor's objections were the only thing I'd received, I wouldn't have thought twice about issuing the permit. My only concern, as I tried to explain before, is that when I receive a 'lawyer letter', I am not so presumptuous as to think that I understand the...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Tim and Brudgers: I actually agree with both of you - if that's possible?? My thought when the "lawyer letter" came through was, "So what?" I should not perform my ministerial duty because someone who attended law school and passed a bar exam sent me a letter?? But, on the other hand, I'm...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Waiting for our attorney, since they played the attorney card, as FredK and several others have mentioned. I'm just trying to reason through it to compare my proposed course of action with the one he recommends.

    Fence permits... (I know...)

You're absolutely correct, Tim. As usual with these situations, I try not to give every single detail of the situation, so as to maintain some degree of anonymity for the parties involved. So as I re-read my OP and subsequent posts, I see that it appears I'm trying to make the decision without...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Unfortunately, we chucked all of Section 105 in our local adoption, and have our own permit requirements (and exemptions). Fences are not exempt at any height in any location (oh, how I wish they were!!!). So in my mind, this comes down - essentially - to the question of whether or not I am...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Great responses - thank you all!! I guess I'm taking an actual situation here and changing it to a hypothetical to focus in on one main issue. My real question is: If it is determined that there exists no easement, am I required to issue a permit, even though from a practical standpoint, I...

    Fence permits... (I know...)

Yet another example of why building departments should not be in the practice of issuing permits for fences: If we do not, as a policy, take responsibility for verifying location of fences relative to property lines, and a property owner applies for a fence permit which might split (and render...

    1104.4

This is almost completely irrelevant, but....in Illinois we have our own Accessibility Code. The wording regarding mezzanines is similar, and also exempts closets / storage areas located in the mezzanine. I asked for an interpretation a while back regarding exactly what you've put forth here...

Anyone tried to view the ICC hearings?

At this point, we can no longer blame the fire service, etc. - they're rightly acting in their best interest. When they run the same play over and over and over again, however, and we don't change our strategy, then it's either our fault or faulty rules. I tend to think a little of both.
