    Code cycle--State of Washington

Sounds like a great idea to me. 6 years would be great. I'm a one person architectural department and the the expense does get out of hand. I just spent 8 hours in IBC code update and another 8 hours in Washington State energy code update just last week. I'd be better spreading my ceu...

Do you want a Chat option?

I had to answer no because I don't see myself using a chat service. I have no objections if chat is provided. I like having a searchable record of discussions for future reference.

Architect recinds seal before permit is issued

Once those drawings are stamped and submitted, I don't see how the jurisdiction can rescind those documents and not allow them to be reviewed and approved for construction. I am an Architect and have been lucky to be paid for my work (most of the time. I have had a deadbeat client or two that...

    Incentives for Going Green

Interesting to have incentives for increased height or area, etc. Makes me wonder how this is enforced. It can take a year after occupancy before receiving a LEED certification. What happens when that LEED Silver building doesn't make LEED Silver? I'm all for incentives for "green" construction...

Need input for Google Search added to top of pages

I'm very partial to Google tools, so I didn't mind seeing it or having it there. But there is a built in search box in the title bar. If it works better, keep it. If not, I see no need for it. I suggest leaving it there a few weeks and then ask if people like it and want to keep it.

Frost protection for ground mount solar array

Hmmm...I really don't know the answer, but I do question Jar's statement. How is this any different than a condenser sitting on a precast slab or a mailbox bolted to the sidewalk. I typically see these examples without frost depth protection, nor do I see any reason to require it. Definition for...

    Occupied Roofs

What is the definition of an occupied roof? Chapter 10 references this several times, but I don't see a definition. I'm assuming the presence of roof top equipment does not make a roof occupied and that some type of regular use by occupants would make it "occupied".

    Just saying hello

Hello, my name is Mark, and I am an Archiolic. I'll read magazines with pictures of code violations after code violations. It used to bother me, but now I self medicate. Now when I see those pictures of stairs without guardrails, I draw in the code compliant railings and have another beer. I've...

    Attic ventilations 24" OC

This is a tough one. My brain is saying this is probably a good solution, but my second thought was that it does not meet the code requirements for clearances. "R806.3Vent and insulation clearance. Where eave or cornice vents are installed, insulation shall not block the free flow of air. A...

Please help with ideas for ICC BB

cda, I have to admit this very thought has been in my head since this discussion started. If they did offer jar a ridiculous amount of money, I could not argue for him not to accept it.

    landings/spiral stairs

Globe, There's no dumb questions here, but I do fail to see why the enclosure as any bearing on the question. For what it's worth, it sounds to me like it would meet exemption #4

Please help with ideas for ICC BB

I've mentioned this before, but have not seen others expressing the same wish. I'd like to see access to the forum using a newsreader like Outlook Express, Thunderbird or Windows Live. I am much more active in forums using a newsreader vs logging into an internet page.

That does it. It must be time to change careers to Plans Examiner / Inspector :-)

Exterior Windows Section R612.2/613.2 (2009/2006 IRC)

I understand your direction of thinking/concern, but I don't think you could call the bench a finished floor without a compliant stair to that floor level.

2nd Floor Window above a 1st Floor Roof

nothing to prohibit having a window as you describe. The same snow problem can occur with window wells to a basement bedroom. Would you look at that case the same? As others have mentioned, it's desirable to have as much space as possible to get the proper flashing installed.

    ICC Survey Regarding Bulletin Boards

IMHO, this would then include the entire board of ICC. When it closed down, I emailed board members that I thought it was a big mistake to close it to non-members. I got some nice replies, but all in all, the attitude was this is the way it's going to be and that I needed join if I wanted to...

New Thread - What to recommend to ICC re: Bulletin Board/Forum

    1. Open access to everyone! 2. Besides having access via the web format, provide access with newsreader programs like Outlook Express, Windows Live & Thunderbird. I would follow much closer to any group with usenet interface option

Copyright in Architectural Works: What You Need to Know

Rick, I've looked into copyright requirements on several occasions and it's my non-lawyer opinion that simply putting a copyright notice on the documents is next to meaningless, but I could be wrong. If you or anyone else has a reputable web site link that explains your position, I'd like to...

    Too restrictive?

From another article, here's their description of a formula restaurant: It defines a "formula restaurant" as a business required to provide "substantially identical named menu items, packaging, food preparation methods, employee uniforms, interior decor, signage, exterior design or name as any...

    Too restrictive?

I'm not going to go with the trend of responses so far. IMHO, banning chain restaurants and businesses is unconstitutional because it creates an inequitable business environment of competition in favor of local ownership. I think what needs to happen in communities like this one is to establish...

    Truss to stick built transistion...

As the design professional, I make sure the set of construction documents shows loads from stick framing being applied to a truss. The truss shop drawings are then reviewed to make sure the load was calculated in the design. It's not real common, but not uncommon either to have a mixed framed...

I used to automatically login when clicking my link to this site. It no longer does this. After getting to the site, if I click the forum tab, it will then log me in automatically(which is the same url as my link). Just wondeering if this is happening to others as well.
