    Personal care homes

Thanks for the replies. Our Council and their lawyer want to take this situation to Superior Court for injunctive relief or something, as the neighbors feel so threatened. I'm not such a gung-ho soldier in this.

    Personal care homes

Since we appear to have a number of zoning warriors among us, I'd like to hear from the august body re "personal care homes". We have a big corporation that provides in-home care to a variety of persons with an array of disabilities. In our town an incident occurred that is very close to one...

    Zoning Officer?

Zoning has been quite a learning curve for me too, as I was likewise blessed. Building codes by comparison are so cut and dried, so technical and measurable.

    Five Thousand Years Ago

1281, I'm told there was a time when ritual regicide ruled, when the great leader himself willingly was sacrificed for the people and society he so loved. Somewhere along the line, however, a ruler figured out that they could scrifice something else instead, symbolically. There, apparently...

Plumb bob, and I think one of the builders' cousins was a friend of Pythagoras.

The Ten Billion Dollar A Year Industry

I downloaded NEC08 from Malamud site, but can't copy-paste from the shaded content. Also I can't do it from ICC free site. FM, what is "special paste?" BTW, I am an XP refusnik, and still haven't moved thru Windows to 7. Is that the problemo?

    Accessibility for Wastewater Treatment Plant

Curious that there would be accessible parking without routes to buildings. Our state has an accessibility code that supercedes, but is largely based in ANSI, apparently so that state officials can tweak as they see fit. Does 1103.2.5 offer no relief?

test of copy and paste from free codes

Followup: I downloaded NEC08 from the referenced site. The PDF works well except: Now and then I like to select, copy, and paste from electronic references when I am generating written codes application memos and/or letters/notes etc. This copy of NEC08 will do OK with copy-paste except for...

    Cantankerous Old Man get Job

As a one-man P&Z+BI dept myself I can attest to the plenty-to-do aspect, and I don't get but 16 hrs week out of this little town. I also inspect for one that has a census population of 165. Need I point out that in some places the "sense of place" is well expressed, although these little...

Labeled as Townhouse But Only Two Units

Suggest to the developer that, since he can't call it a townhome, he should build a nice little greenspace, a vest pocket park, for the enjoyment of the townehome dwellers.

    Washing machine trap

Love the vertical dryer vent duct. I was in a home with one of these 3 yrs or so after occupancy, and the whole little laundry room had a thin lint coating on every surface. I suggested to the occupant they clean the vertical duct.

    Age of manufactured dwelling

In our state "affordable" often means manufactured. Local authorities, through time, tended to control the more rapid decline of viability shown by the category of building by restricting the age of units brought across county lines. This year the state legislature passed a law that prohibits...

Do you want a Chat option?

Like mtcabin I am ignert of this thing...I have been able to get fairly fast replies to nuts and bolts questions here, and like syarn, I like having access to the development of a question and its answers, but I'll vote for it.

    Tea anyone?

In my spare time I've been reading selections from Carl Jung, who says, regarding any and every organization, that the larger it becomes, the more laden it is with problems associated with mass mentality and/or "collective mind". The mass mentality tends to crush individuals, encourage...

    Oppppsssssss

Old story everywhere. A local school superintendent was busted having a "business lunch" at a strip club, stuffing taxpayers' $20 bills in strippers' garters, writing all off as expenses. He was just short of being tarred and feathered, his ride out of town was not on a rail but could have been.

I used to belong to that one till it became subscription...was mostly California people, tho. It was good but not as freeflowing and active as the old BB. No answer still to my question here...why did old BB say it had 14,000 members? Was it true?

    I Need Some Help...

"...How and where can I address the mold?..." You? How about the owner's hired help? Professional designers should be on this case. On the old BB we had a great member named Caohmin P. McConnell, or something like that, whose was/is an industrial hygenist and who is a font of relevant info.

    Roof over a roof?

hmmmm. If the space is less than 30" high it doesn't have to be accessible. Sadly, I knew of a home where a "home inspector" who could not gain access told the buyer, peering thru a gable end vent thru a ladder, said, "It's got two roofs!" so you're better off! What was not known was whether...

    rail encroachment on accessible landing

Stair width is allowed some encroachment by required handrails. Where accessibility requires a 60"X60" landing because it contains a turn, can the required handrail (because it has a dropoff) encroach on the 60 inch square?

    High Maintenence P-trap

"...In their defense; most of them don't know the codes anyway..." You are too kind hearted UB, tho I know exactly what you mean. They are, after all, "officials", whether they know what they are doing or not. Around here some can't read the newspaper, much less the code book.
