Skagit Co. CBO Tim Devries Passed Away

For those of you in the NW or who might have met Tim: Tim Devries Passes Away It is with great sadness to report that Tim DeVries, CBO, ACO, from Skagit County, passed away after a long battle with lung cancer. Tim served on the WABO Board of Directors for many years and resigned in the spring...

" We Don't Need No Stinkin Code"

While I disagree with a lot of the "no permits" rant, it does serve a good purpose for us in the code industry. It is a reminder that there is a group of folks who would like absolutely no regulation whatsoever. While this represents an extreme view as well as a small segement of the...

    Ladder Liability

My former profession was a tree climber. Some of the crane operators would let us ride the hook/ball up to the tree. Sure saved a ton of time, clipping in to that and going for a ride, 120 feet up.!!!!!! I will look for some old pics of that to post.

    Missing icc records?!??!?!

I was surprised that mine were there. I have sent several emails to the ICC and now they don't return my email or phone calls.... My complaints were 1) the 2009 I codes print quality (paper quality, durability, etc, was very below the previous years.) and 2) When I renew, you move up my...

    Section R602.10.1.1. - Spacing

Yeah, they simplified the BW requirements in the 2009. It used to be 6 pages, but they simplified it to 32.

    Missing icc records?!??!?!

One of our inspectors was trying to renew his certifications and discovered that the ICC record of all his certifications has disappeared. I decided to check my own and everyone in the department. Mine is there, but 2 out of 4 of our people that have ICC certs were completely missing from the...

    Condensate disposal / Trap primer???

I just got a plumbing diagram and they also have a sink going indirect to the floor drain as well, so with both of these, I think it will serve as an adequate primer... Thanks for the feeback and discussion.

congress building code, good idea bad idea???

I am not advocating elimination of all government services. Your sarcasm is noted however.

congress building code, good idea bad idea???

Excellent point. Excellent starting point for eliminating entire government agencies. Department of Education can go. We do not need a new agency, committee, vision, or action by an existing agency. Let the states take care of it. Period. Name one thing that the Federal Government does...

congress building code, good idea bad idea???

Great, another unfunded mandate. Let's give the feds control over the building codes. Unfunded mandates. More regulation. This is insane. I support the building codes entirely, but we need to have a serious disucssion on a national level on what services and entire agencies we are going to...

So you wanted to be a Building Official? Longevity?

I lived in Portland most of my life until 5 years ago. They are the MicroBrew capital of the world. McMinimans has 35 or 40 brew pubs all over portland and metro area. If anyone wants their wines, you can go to Edgefield winery, about 18 miles East of downtown. One secret that doesn't get...

    inspection record/written correction notice

We use carbonless forms here. Fill them in, some check boxes for type of inspeciton and "approved", "approved with conditions", "Partial approval", "denied", and "not performed". I got one of our inspectors set up with a lap top and am working to develop a printable inspection report that we...

So you wanted to be a Building Official? Longevity?

You have mine and probably one from the inspector joining me. We don't have final approval to go but the CBO is pushing hard for us. I would call it 90% likely. Can't help with the fishing other than the advice of don't eat anything from the Willamette river in town.

So you wanted to be a Building Official? Longevity?

One more off topic post... I see a lot of tag lines supporting JP for ICC. Good news is myself and one of my inspectors should be making the trek down to P-town to vote. Hope to meet some of you in person. I spent most of my life in the Portland area and only recently moved away, so it will...

IRC Accessory Structure Proposed Interpretation 23-12

Given that the express a limit in the definitions, how would you interpret that section of the code. Is it 3000 square feet of floor area (as the code reads) , or 3000 square feet of floor area per floor (as the ICC would like to interpret or explain.)???

IRC Accessory Structure Proposed Interpretation 23-12

Not sure what you mean by basements have never been included in the area of a building. If they are below grade, they don't count as a story, but they definately are counted as area. If I have a 2000 square foot house on top of a 2000 square foot finished basement, I have a 4000 square foot...
