How do you educate contractors in between code cycles?

Most of us have email. I'd be happy to sign up if asked if I'd like to be put on a mail list next time I went in to pull a permit.

    Vinyl Windows

Hotels have had hot spots around the courtyards that are the focal point of low e glazings. Sounds like a green opportunity, build the south wall in a parabolic shape and focus on the hot water heater in the yard, or the neighboras house that blocks your view. Typically caulked fins as well.

Deck Pier/Footing Size and Tributary Loads

Are we only concerned with vertical loads? Are there conditions on where the column is hinged and how it is footed? A picture of a pier several feet tall in a basement with a post on it supporting a girder drew comments the other day. If I have a 12" pier 4' tall into and top flush with grade...

Deck Pier/Footing Size and Tributary Loads

Oh, the manufacturer knows exactly what they are doing when they print that ad. But the other side of that is that we do not have good prescriptive guidelines for typical pier situations.

Deck Pier/Footing Size and Tributary Loads

I keep my spreadsheets here; timbertoolbox.com I'd be happy to stick it there and you could link to it if you're comfortable. I've never been comfortable with an unfooted sonotube, I can't recall a plan that didn't at least start with a 2x2x8" w/2 #4 bars ea way. Personally I prefer to bury a...

    Gift idea?

Well... my first car was an Opel, traded a pair of hiking boots for it and should have realized why he wanted the boots and that I'd soon be needing them. Being young and dumb I pulled the engine with the help of a couple of friends and we learned beam theory, yup you'll break a double 2x4...

Where to find guidelines for porch roof construction?

Guess I'll be Art Linkgetter tonite :) DCA6 is the deck guide, there is no "prescriptive" porch guide. http://awc.org/publications/download.html I hate to say it if they am one but it sounds like they might need to take Francis' advice above.

    Heavy Timber Fastening

Sure, I've got a few links handy. I'll try to add more as they come to mind. If there is a specific need it might help jog something loose. Start with the NDS, that is going to be your base reference. Dr Woeste just posted an upcoming class based around the latest version, I see AWC's Buddy...

    Joist bearing

The valley jack rafters bear against the ridge but hang on the valley. With any connection determine the load, know the strength of the connectors and make the appropriate connections. The prescriptive connections for those joints really should be better or not in the codebook. Do you allow...

    beam pocket bearing

Roger gives an excellent description of moment (bending) capacity for a beam. But, I think the question is about bearing capacity of wood (compressive strength in the radial or transverse direction to the grain). If I'm understanding the op right the compressive strength perpendicular to grain...

    Spring..........

That hail hit us right about 4 pm at work Thursday. We had left the maters and peppers on the deck, happily the hail didn't cross the mountain to our side, happy to see them upright when we got home. This week blooming in the woods, catawba rhodos, flame azalea, fraser magnolia, tulip poplar...

How to avoid tall concrete piers

I looked at the picture and thought it looked like a pretty dumb way to solve a problem... then I remembered the picture I posted yesterday of rubblestone piers 42" above a porch floor with wood posts to the porch roof. I believe Mark's pic is a soft story problem caused by a a weak braced wall...

Chimney top, cap over multiple flues

    Bill, it's a solid masonry chimney, 3 terra cotta flue liners. Here's a rough sketch, there will be expanded metal mesh to keep critters out. Looks like I muffed the photo, trying again;

Chimney top, cap over multiple flues

Thanks Guys, I had heard the same thing Bill but couldn't find anything prohibiting it. The situation I'm talking about is a bit different than Bill's, we want to put all the flues under one common raincap. The flues are side by side and we would like to weld a shallow hip roofed screened top...

Chimney top, cap over multiple flues

We have a chimney with 3 tile flues that serve 1, an outside fireplace, 2, an indoor woodstove, and 3, a spare running to the basement for futre possible use, fuel I'm not going to guess. May we put them all under one common raincap? I'm not finding a cite one way or the other.

Two remodelers fined by EPA for lead paint violations

I don't typically do old work but I wish I could get training closer than a state away. I do wonder if they will pull permit records and contractor certs at some future time after people are many violations deep to offset budgetary shortfalls.

    Vegetable Alert

Ours camped out for the first time last night. We had a couple of light frosts midweek, hoping the blueberries, apples and cherries weren't too affected. Toasted my rotator, it'll be the summer of a big garden and a well mowed lawn. This was the first Easter in memory here with dogwoods...

30% reduction to Southern Pine Span Charts

This came in yesterday from SBCCA and needs action from those interested by today. They appear to be requesting letters of support for a study. On the surface I agree with this page, I haven't read any deeper; http://sbcmag.info/news/2012/apr/travis-seeking-support-msu-lumber-study I think...
