IBC 2012, 1014.2 (2) An exit access shall not pass through a room that can be locked to prevent egress.

Need some clarification, if you are exiting through that door, could the door have a thumb lock or lever handle privacy lockset on the egress side? or it just can't have a lock period!

It leads me to believe the other side can't have a lock? But possibly the egress side could?

Section 1010.1.9.6, Unlatching: "The unlatching of any door or leaf shall not require more than one operation."

There are exceptions for doors for detention facilities, with manually-operated bolt locks, with automatic flush bolts, and for Group R dwelling and sleeping units. Therefore, if the door cannot open with one operation (excluding exceptions), then the locking mechanism is not permissible.

The hardware on the non-egress side can be locked, but when a person needs to exit from the other side (i.e., egress side), then all the person should be required to do is grab the lever and turn it to unlatch the door.
