Some Activities to Enjoy in Taos
Rio Grande Whitewater
Racecourse
A rollercoaster of a river run, Racecourse is the most popular white water rafting stretch on the Rio Grande. Rated Class 2 and Class 3 rapids with plenty of splash. Your guides: Big River Raft Trips, Cottam's Rio Grande River Trips, Far Flung Adventure Tours, Los Rios River Runners, New Mexico River Adventures, New Wave Rafting Co.
Taos Box
This 16-mile stretch of the Rio Grande is the real thing. Called the Box because of the steep walls that make the canyon nearly impassable without a raft, Taos Box will whip you around some, especially its four miles of Class 4 rapids. Your guides: Far Flung Adventure Tours, Los Rios River Runners, New Mexico River Adventures, New Wave Rafting Co.
Chama River
Family Rides
Float through the spectacular Chama River sandstone canyon north of Abiqui with its fantastic rock formations made famous by painter Georgia O’Keeffe. Drift ten miles past cliffs towering up to 1,500 feet, striped in vivid shades of pink, vermilion, yellow, and white. Glide by lush cottonwood groves and take in the Southwest scenery at a sane pace. Your guides: Far Flung Adventure Tours, Los Rios River Runners, New Wave Rafting Co.
Up in the Air
The sky is indeed big and blue in Northern New Mexico. It’s a adventure in itself up there, from Taos’ fast-changing changing weather and iconic Southwestern sunrises, sunsets, moonrises and moonsets to the never-ending panorama of stars seen against a black, black sky. There’s birdlife to spy as well. If you’re up for seeing the mesas and Taos’ wildly dynamic geography from above, a hot air balloon ride could be the new high for you. Take flight with expert pilots over strange and sensational terrain. Drift past ancient basalt formations or dip down into the Rio Grande Gorge. Taos and ballooning were made for each other. Welcome aboard!
Tours & Itineraries
Day trip to entirely different worlds and be back in Taos for dinner. Taos is the ideal homebase for exploring the mountains, mesas, history, and cultures of Northern New Mexico. You can find details on day trips and making the most of your time by reviewing the suggested day trips below. And stop by Taos Visitor Center when you arrive for maps and particulars on each tour. Be prepared to be wow’d!
