In Palo Alto, California we have an existing stall that requires 4' on the inside of the stall and 5' on the exterior of the stall per code. We are short 3.5" and cannot move the wall on either side. The official says no hardship allowed. To fix this we will have to spend $65K as we will have to move a shower as well. Does using an automatic opener on a stall door relieve us of this requirement if we give the 5' on the outside and leave it 3'-8.5" on the inside? I have never seen an auto opener on a stall door, but others tell me it exists.
