• Smoke alarms are required to be replaced after 10 years in one- and two-family dwellings

Just try and enter someones "castle" to enforce that one.

When they alter, modify or remodel the castle, they need to replace the unit.

Might work except it could 15 or 20 years

as far as when the house sells. The building department is not a party of the sale so we will never know. I am not part of the real-estate sales police

What ever happened to adopting codes that are enforceable?

We do a truth in sales inspection, usually finding illegal additions, smoke/carbon, water heater strapping, excreta

I worked in such a jurisdiction. The planning dept. and I would do an inspection. The fee was $1000.00. No sh1t $1000.00. Some of the things we found were amazing.
