Related to my earlier post, several people suggested just calling it a 3BR and don't mess with ADUs.
Again, this is a house for my adult son and me to share, and we'd like it to *function* like 2 (or even maybe 3 - my sister and my cousin are both looking for digs) separate living spaces.
Is it legal to have 'divisions' within a 3BR house? More than one kitchen? No stairs between levels?
It is ONE single-family home we are trying to end up with, but where there's space and privacy between the 'suites.'
Thoughts?
Thanks.

I think that any prohibitions against what you're describing would not be found in state or model building codes. There may be local zoning and land-use codes, but those are often subjective and can be appealed at a local level. I would suggest proposing what you want and let them tell you why you can't have it. Then appeal their decision.

I would would look in the definitions of the local zoning ordnance for dwelling units.

I can tell you in my community the separation of the units would be a duplex or multi family for 3 or dwellings, see definition of dwelling unit
