Not where I really want to be
If you have a 3 unit R2 and want to split one of the largest units into two units making it a 4 unit (no added square footage or building footprint) will this trigger fire-sprinklers per the IBC? Not looking for common sense personal opinions, just code language only. What does the 2018 IBC/IEBC require?

2018 IEBC 603 (Alterations - Level 2) refers to the requirements of Chapters 7 (Alterations - Level 1) and 8 (Alterations - Level 2).

Section 703 Fire Protection requires alterations in a manner that maintains the level of fire protection provided. Section 803.2.2 describes situations where sprinklers are required. Of the two conditions that must both exist before sprinklers are required, one is that the work area is greater than 50 percent of the floor area, which seems unlikely in this situation.
