A Few Things To Check Before Calling For Your First House Framing Inspection - Helping New Builders

Nailplates.... not sure what he is talking about for a 6' plate strap, maybe that's a high wind thing (we get a small strap), but the plywood works on an exterior wall... and a constant reference to the engineer which we rarely get for a house...On a house the guard is 36" not 42"...He talks about what is required by "the building department" not what is required by code or the designer....Saying that the "mood of the inspector" or "if he likes you" matters on the inspection is unprofessional...He talks about tin at the fireplace for fireblocking which is not code approved per R302.11.1

But hey, I am a critic for a living...

R312.1.2 Height. Required guards at open-sided walking surfaces, including stairs, porches, balconies or landings, shall be not less than 42 inches in height as measured vertically above the adjacent walking surface or the line connecting the nosings.

Exceptions:
  1. Guards on the open sides of stairs shall have a height of not less than 34 inches measured vertically from a line connecting the nosings.
  2. Where the top of the guard serves as a handrail on the open sides of stairs, the top of the guard shall be not less than 34 inches and not more than 38 inches as measured vertically from a line connecting the nosings.
