Ready to final an addition to an existing (very old) mercantile business. You have to climb stairs to reach the main entrance.

As part of the addition they were required to create an accessible entrance at the rear and a ramp that leads form the front of the store to the rear entrance.

IBC 1110.1 #5 Says a sign is required for an accessible entrance where not all entraces are accessible.

IBC 1110.2 #1 Says directional signage indicating the route to the nearest accessible entrance shall be provided.

In both cases the International Symbol of Accessibility must be present.

So.. I guess the question is what else is required to be present? As for signing the accessible entrance, can it just be a sign bearing the International Symbol?

As for the directional signage, the symbol with an arrow?

In both cases should the signs be tactile? Only A117.1 applies.

Thanks,

Tim

You are quoting IBC Chapter 11 then you say Only A117.1 applies, are you saying Both apply? or Only A117.1 applies?

Typically wayfinding signs do not need to be tactile

Nor do you need an arrow, unless you need to identify an accessible POT

Thanks for the images, Mark.

To clarify, IBC applies and A117.1 applies. For the purposes of my enforcement, ADA does not apply.

For the purposes of meeting 1110.1, would a sign with just the Symbol be sufficient next to the accessible entrance, or would it have to be descriptive.. ie state "ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE" with the Symbol?

Thanks,

Tim

Just the ISA symbol They make decals, that are self adhesive

ISA Decal.

UV resistant decal (sticker) measures 6″ x 6″ and is ideal for glass doors

Price: $5.99

I think just the symbol is OK IMO.....the symbol labels an accessible feature....nothing else required....I do not believe the tactile signs are required outside the building...

Thanks for the prompt replies, I really appreciate it.

We brought the building this far, just want to make sure we finish it properly.

The only reason I would label it with anything other than the symbol is if there are other entrances (i.e., service, non-accessible, etc.) or accessible features (i.e., parking stall) also located at the rear of the buildng, which may cause confusion, or is not readily distinguishable as an entrance. This would only be a recommendation however.
