Accessible Hardware for Storage Units

While both designing and reviewing other designs for a few handicap accessible storage units within a larger public use storage complex (*), I have adopted the idea that the door hardware should be a push button pin number controlled electric garage door opener. And if the building owner wants to provide some other hardware that is within the 18 inch and 48 inch reach range, then it must be some type of handle, pull, latch, or lock with a shape that is easy to grasp with one hand and does not require tight grasping, tight pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate.

What have you seen as far as acceptable latches and handles?

Would ropes with a knot on the end be an acceptable example?

* Yes, 5% of total number of storage units are accessible and/or one of each storage unit size - whichever number yields the most ADA units.

I have reviewed and inspected a few accessible self-storage units in my day.

I have also seen manufacture cut sheets that detail out how to make them accessible

What I see is a "loop" handle to retract a pin latch lock. The same loop, if between 15” to 48” AFF can be used to open an overhead garage door. The door can be balanced to achieve 5# of opening force. Once open, the operable parts for lights, etc. cannot exceed 48”. To close the door, there is a rope with a loop below 48” and the force to close is less than 5#. I have dealt with the garage door reps, and they have made this all happen

We also require that there be an accessible parking space and access aisle located in front of the accessible unit if an outdoor unit.
