Hello! In 11B.207 - Accessible Means of Egress in the California Building Code notes that Means of Egress shall comply with Chapter 10, Section 1009 and Section 11B-207. Exception 4 states that Doors that provide access only to interior or exterior stairways shall not be required to comply with Section 11B-404. Section 11B-404 notes all the clearance, maneuvering, threshold, hardware, etc. required for doors, doorways and gates,
This is the first time that I'm seeing this section and I'm really surprised! Am I understanding correctly that in an interior/exterior stairway within a multifamily residential building, where one door at ground level is exiting into the public ROW, and all other doors into the shaft occur at corridors, that the door exiting into the right of way does not need to comply with 11B-404?? Does it also mean that the doors at upper levels do not have to comply with that section because they only provide access to interior stairways? Or because you can access a corridor from the inside of the interior/exterior stairway these doors do have to comply with 11B-404?
Or is this section talking specifically about stairways that are NOT exit stairways?
TIA!
