Existing "school" building, (thought it would get more exposure here), plans are lacking on info. I believe it to be E use VB construction. Tearing down exterior infill walls (nonstructural). New windows and wall framing. I do not believe the building is sprinklered. (Waiting on an answer)....Should the "new walls" have direct doors and EERO if it is not sprinklered?

No,

Unless they are doing I-4 day care

Or local or state requirement

Which edition of Ibc?

Sorry we are in our own little world....CT 2003 IBC amended in 2009,2011,20013....My hangup is it is a "new" exterior wall....I think it work without doors under my 2003 IEBC but of course the designer did not give a code or for that matter a stamp, on his plans.

"""I believe it to be E""

And your belief is based on??

Public school? private school ? children age?

College

Day care?

Some other use?

It's called an "early learning center"...at some point it was an E....W.A.G.......I think I have my answer, does not need the doors to the outside, EERO required...Basis: the doors to the outside would be the exception for not sprinklering, since there is nothing that rises to the level of triggering sprinklering, they don't need that exception. EERO I say new wall complies with CH 10 unless the designer goes IEBC, then we start over and I think they get out of that too....

I would agree that there is a significant difference between the "E" and "I" occupancy requirements. With daycare centers, we encourage folks to install exterior doors directly from each child play room if they insist on avoiding the sprinkler requirements.
