I'm currently reviewing an airport that is doing an interior remodel and addition. The addition consists of constructing exterior walls on the first floor around a section of the second floor that is currently cantilevered over the existing exterior wall. I have been considering the TSA/baggage sorting/employee area as the anchor building and the area accessible to the public as the covered mall. The addition will be to the baggage sorting area and the area above is currently an A2 restaurant. My question is specifically about IBC 2018 402.4.2.2 which states "An anchor building shall be separated from the covered or open mall building by fire walls complying with Section 706.
Exceptions:
Anchor buildings of not more than three stories above grade plane that have an occupancy classification the same as that permitted for tenants of the mall building shall be separated by 2-hour fire-resistance-rated fire barriers complying with Section 707."
Since this section specifically calls out fire walls and fire barriers but not horizontal assemblies, does that mean no horizontal separation is required between an anchor building and tenant spaces?
