Work has just begun on the development of a new NFPA standard specific to "fire prevention activities. This document will address all four of the 'food groups" that are part of "fire prevention": plan review, code enforcement, fire investigation, and public education. The document will address issues such as goals and objectives, program management, professional qualifications and staffing.

The investigation section will address everything from preliminary origin and cause determination by a company officer per NFPA 1021 to a complete investigation.

Committee literally had its' first meeting this week and will met again in October. It will sometime after October before there will be anything available for public review/comment. As of right now it is expected to be 2014 before the document is presented to the NFPA membership for approval.

As chairman of the task group on fire investigation, I would be very interested in hearing input from both the public and private sector. Of particular interest is input on establishing staff levels.

Please email any thoughts/input directly to me.

I see it refers to staffing, not sure it is because off the economy

Have worked in two other cities and the manning was very low, and of course the FMO is not the most funded office in a lot of cities

Won't be any different than 1710, 1720 or 1500. It will come down to how administartion interprets or wants to use sections for their benefit. The documents mentioned while not officially adopted by many jurisdictions pose arguments both pro and con when "IT" hit's the fan and will be argued in a similar manner as 921 is within the industry....JMHO.
