In an effort to secure classroom doors against intruders, a group of students has come up with an invention that is getting a lot of press. In my opinion, this device is not code-compliant, and it also works only on doors with closers, which many current classrooms do not have. And if this product gets into the hands of the wrong people, it could be used to secure an assembly occupancy filled with people in seconds, and in a way that nobody would notice. I have discussed some of these quick-fix products with code officials, and I have not had many AHJs say that they would allow a product that violates the code requirements for egress or fire doors. I would love to have feedback from some of you on my blog post about this product. I don't want to crush the kids' dreams, but I hope the information will guide them in their research and design ideas.
