UL released a customer bulletin on Dec. 5, 2019 announcing that the effective dates for ANSI/UL 217, Standard for Smoke Alarms, 8th Ed. and ANSI/UL 268, Standard for Smoke Detectors for Fire Alarm Systems, 7th Ed. have been extended from May 29, 2020 to June 30, 2021. The NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code requirement for smoke alarm and smoke detectors for resistance to common nuisance sources from cooking is effective on Jan.1, 2022. The new effective date of June 30, 2021 responds to the needs of industry and will allow more manufacturers to have their products available to meet the NFPA 72 requirement.

There are currently both smoke alarm and smoke detector manufacturers’ products certified to meet the new requirements, and these products are available now in the marketplace. Visit UL Product iQ, UL’s location for online certification information. For smoke alarms search “217 8th” and select UTGT under the UL Category Control Number and for smoke detectors search “268 7th” and select UROX under the UL Category Control Number. With certified new edition products available in the market now, and additional products coming to the market prior to June 30, 2021, this change will not impact the fire service or existing smoke alarm giveaway programs.
