using 2009 IBC, NFPA 72 2010 edition, and NFPA 80, or other

1. say there is a fire wall with five seperate fire rated doors in it, spread out along the same wall.

2. smoke detectors are provided at each door, for release of that specific door, per NFPA 72 spacing for door release

do all five doors have to close on any fire alarm??

or is it just per door if the smoke detector by that door goes into alarm??

code or standard section ????

The affected smoke detector just has to release the one door that it controls, however, this leads to a programming nightmare with the door smokes in this case not being allowed to count as area detectors....... (they are dedicated to door operations)

Most areas want to minimize programming opportunitiy for errors so they will allow the doors to all shut on a genral alarm or water flow.

In short, Designer choice - see below

21.8 Door Release Service.

21.8.1 The provisions of Section 21.8 shall apply to the methods of connection of door hold-open release devices and to integral door hold-open release, closer, and smoke detection devices.

21.8.2 All detection devices used for door hold-open release service shall be monitored for integrity in accordance with Section 10.17.

Exception: Smoke detectors used only for door release and not for open area protection.

21.8.3 All door hold-open release and integral door release and closure devices used for release service shall be monitored for integrity in accordance with Section 21.2.

21.8.4 Magnetic door holders that allow doors to close upon loss of operating power shall not be required to have a secondary power source.

Section 715.4.8 of the 2009 IBC sends you to Section 907.3, which sends you to NFPA 72.

I looked at NFPA 72 but I can't find anything that specifically says whether a detector results in one door closing, or more than one. I know there used to be a requirement for all stair doors to close when one closed by smoke detection, but I can't find that either.

So looks like one door would close from smoke hitting the detector

But the other four in the same wall, open to the same area, would stay open till smoke got to them.

Makes as much since as fusible link on a rated door

Well EXPERTS thank you again!!!!!!

Are you looking for NFPA 101 5-2.1.8, exception C,2?
Will look at that section on Monday

But cannot enforce 101 for this project

Fair enough.

As an aside, there is a door hardware item that will do exactly as you are describing. A Glynn Johnson 280 SENSAGUARD (see pages 31-32) is a stand alone, battery operated Holder/Release Smoke Detector. Does not connect to a building smoke/fire detection system, only releases the door on which it is installed.

Seen those

In the project we are reviewing one side of the door the ceiling is at about ten feet

On the other side it is about thirty feet!!!

We made a comment to tell us how high they are installing them and installation has to meet Nfpa 72
