How do I terminate a 2 hour wall at an existing non rated wall with windows?

I do not recall what section of the code iBC it would be?

Thank you in advance

Boy, do I feel stupid. The answer to my question was in the thread's title.

To answer your question, it depends on the fire-resistance-rated wall assembly.

If it's a fire wall, see Section 706.5 (2009 IBC). If it's a fire barrier, there really is no requirements; however, see Section 708.6 if the fire barrier is part of a shaft enclosure.

Yes. THe existing wall is partial block up to 4' then wondows above that. The new interior wall is steel stude with 2 hour fire rateing. This wall come in to the outside existing wall at 90 degrees. We would liek to use glass blocks - 4' on each side of the vertical connection, all the way to the top of the roof. We can get 90 minute fire rated glass blocks. Are issues are 1) We are not sure that we can conncect the steel stud wall to these blocks-code ? 2) if we can, what is the application of how to do this.

So, I assume you're talking about a fire wall intersecting a non-rated exterior wall. The use of rated glass block should work; however, it only needs to be 3/4-hour-rated, if that helps you any.

I'm not sure about attachment of the metal stud wall to the glass block. You'll have to discuss that with the manufacturer of the glass block and possibly your structural engineer. Depending on the height of the wall, it may be sufficient to anchor the partition just at the top and bottom runners to comply with Section 1607.13.

However, the joint between the fire wall and the now-rated portion of the exterior wall will need to have a fire-resistant joint system complying with Section 714.

Glass block in a rated condition usually requires a steel channel frame. You need to research with the manufacturer of the glass block for his requirements in rated conditions.

What are the termination requirements for a rated exterior wall meeting a non-rated exterior wall on the same plane (needs to be rated for 10' of the existing exterior wall, the rest can remain)
