I have an existing building that utilizes a 3 story, metal framed "atrium" that is applied to the exterior of the building. There are smoke barrier windows into the upper stories from the "atrium" but no unprotected openings. My question is that since the definition of Atrium is, A vertical space that is closed at the top, connecting two or more stories in Group I-2 and I-3 occupancies or three or more stories in all other occupancies, if the "atrium" space is not open to or connecting any story other than the ground floor, is it technically considered and atrium?
